Inter won the Derby d’Italia and extended their lead over Juventus in the standings, moving to +4 with one game to play in Serie A. At the San Siro, the hosts took advantage of a lucky episode in the first half and controlled the result in the second half, despite Calhanoglu’s post and Szczesny’s saves.
Inter’s lead in the first half
The match started with a high tempo and with the two teams facing each other. Inter tried to play the game, while Juventus tried to exploit the counter-attacks. On 25 minutes, the first chance come for the Nerazzurri: Dimarco cross from the left and Thuram, in the box, anticipate by Bremer and Szczesny, who saved in the dying moments.
In the 37th minute, however, Inter took the lead: Barella lofted a ball into the box for Pavard, who miscued his shot; the ball reach Thuram, who thwart by Gatti; the Bianconeri defender, attempting to sweep the ball away, struck the ball with his chest and headed it into his own goal, mocking Szczesny. Inter took the lead through an own goal and went into the break with a smile on their face.
Serie A has an owner
In the second half, Juventus try to react and raised their centre of gravity, but Inter defend tidily and are dangerous on the break. In the 57th minute, the Nerazzurri went close to doubling the lead with Calhanoglu, who hit the post with a shot from outside the box.
Juve responded with a shot from Vlahovic, which Sommer blocked without any problems. Inter has another great chance: Barella break down the right and serve Arnautovic, whose shot block by Szczesny with a prodigious reflex.
In the 75th minute, Juve claimed a penalty for a collision between Bremer and Thuram in the box, but referee Maresca, after consulting the VAR, saw no irregularity. In the final, Juve threw themselves forward in desperation, but Inter resisted and brought home a precious victory.
