Inter confirm their status as the league’s most in-form team by thrashing Atalanta 4-0 in the Serie A Week 21 second leg. Simone Inzaghi’s Nerazzurri extend their lead to 12 points over second-place Juventus and set a new record: they are the first team in Serie A history to score at least four goals in four consecutive matches.
Atalanta, on the other hand, suffer their heaviest defeat since 2017 and remain in fifth place, two points off the Champions zone. Gian Piero Gasperini’s team paid dearly for individual mistakes and ineffectiveness in front of goal.
The game unblocked in the 26th minute of the first half, when Darmian took advantage of a loose ball on a rebound by Atalanta goalkeeper Carnesecchi and slotted home with his left. Inter doubled the score in the 43rd minute with Martinez, who finished a splendid choral action with a shot from the edge of the area that sent the whole San Siro into raptures.
Inter, another record
In the second half, Atalanta tried to react but without ever troubling Sommer, who, as in the past few matches, participated as a non-paying spectator. In the 62nd minute, Inter closed out the match; the referee awarded a penalty for a hand foul, recognised by Var. On the penalty spot, the Argentine hypnotised by Carnesecchi, who repelled the shot, on which Dimarco arrived first, scoring the 3-nil goal.
Atalanta continued to push, but Frattesi punished them for the fourth on a free-kick taken by Sanchez. Not even time to celebrate, however, the Roman player who had just entered had to abandon the match through injury. Inter managed to lead until the final whistle, celebrating a deserved and important victory for the Scudetto race. Atalanta, on the other hand, will have to raise their heads again and resume their march towards the Champions League.
