Inter triumph in the end: Lautaro gives Inzaghi the Cup

Inter won the 2023-24 Italian Super Cup, beating Napoli 1-0 at the end of a tight and exciting match. The decisive goal came in the 91st minute, when Lautaro Martinez, the Nerazzurri captain, took advantage of a cross from Pavard and scored with a rapturous clearance.

Napoli, who had held out with ten men for half an hour after Simeone’s expulsion, collapsed under the blows of Inter, who won their third consecutive trophy in this competition, equalling Milan’s record.

For Simone Inzaghi, it is a historic success: the Nerazzurri coach win his fifth Super Cup as coach, surpassing Lippi and Capello and becoming the most successful coach ever in Italy.

The match played on the edge of tension, with two teams facing each other openly and without sparing themselves. Inter started better and created the first chances with Dimarco, Mkhitaryan and Lautaro, who scored a goal cancelled out for offside by Thuram.

Napoli defended tidily and tried to pounce on counter-attacks with Kvaratskhelia and Politano, but did not trouble Sommer.

Inter: the turning point in the second half

In the second half, Napoli became more dangerous and came close to taking the lead through Kvaratskhelia, but Sommer was alert. Inter responded with Thuram, but in the 60th minute came the event that changed the match: Simeone, already cautioned, committed a foul on Acerbi and was sent off.

Mazzarri reinforced the defence with a 5-4-0, but Inter increased the pressure and went close to scoring with Thuram, Lautaro and Pavard. Napoli closed in and tried to resist, but in the 90th minute came the coup de théâtre: Pavard, who had risen in attack, crossed into the middle for Lautaro, who anticipated everyone and beat Gollini with a winning clearance.

Toro exulted and was cautioned, then replaced by Inzaghi, who embraced him. Napoli no longer had the strength to fight back, although Calhanoglu committed Gollini with a shot from outside the box.

Inter celebrate their Super Cup victory, the eighth in their history, and Lautaro lifts the trophy as captain, dedicating it to Inzaghi, the cup king.
