Sei parate e un errore. Ma quando quell’errore spalanca al Real Madrid la porta del 2-0, le parate rischiano inevitabilmente di passare in secondo piano. Al Bernabeu Josep Martínez si è reso protagonista di una leggerezza difficile da accettare a questi livelli: pallone tra i piedi, pressione di Valverde e un dribbling tanto rischioso quanto evitabile che si trasforma nel più semplice degli assist per l’uruguaiano. Un regalo pesantissimo, soprattutto in una partita in cui l’Inter aveva già pochissimo margine per sbagliare. Martínez ha poi provato a cancellarlo con una serie di interventi, alcuni quasi miracolosi, che hanno evitato ai nerazzurri di affondare definitivamente. Ma una prestazione del genere lascia inevitabilmente una domanda: l’Inter ha un problema tra i pali?
Il rischio parte dal basso
La risposta non può arrivare soltanto dall’errore di Madrid. Quando deve fare il portiere nel senso più tradizionale del termine, Martínez ha già dimostrato di avere qualità importanti. Reattività ed esplosività non gli mancano e proprio al Bernabeu ne ha dato un’altra dimostrazione. Le difficoltà emergono maggiormente quando al numero uno viene chiesto di trasformarsi nel primo regista della squadra.
Non è tanto una questione di capacità nel passaggio. In questo avvio di Serie A Martínez ha completato 99 passaggi su 112, con una precisione superiore all’88%. Il problema sembra riguardare soprattutto la gestione del rischio e le scelte sotto pressione. Contro il Real ha provato a giocare quando probabilmente sarebbe stato più semplice allontanare il pallone. Per un portiere moderno, però, sbagliare una scelta con i piedi può pesare quanto sbagliare una parata.
Da Sommer a Martínez, il problema si ribalta
È anche qui che si nota maggiormente la differenza rispetto alla passata stagione. Yann Sommer aveva fatto della gestione con i piedi uno dei suoi punti di forza, diventando in poco tempo parte integrante della costruzione nerazzurra. L’età aveva però inevitabilmente tolto qualcosa sul piano dell’esplosività e della capacità di arrivare su determinati palloni.
Con Martínez la situazione sembra quasi essersi ribaltata. Lo spagnolo offre maggiore reattività tra i pali e la possibilità di trovare la grande parata, ma al momento non garantisce la stessa sicurezza del predecessore quando viene coinvolto nella costruzione. L’Inter ha cambiato portiere e, insieme a lui, anche pregi e difetti del ruolo.
Provedel, da vice a concorrente?
Le gerarchie estive erano abbastanza definite. Martínez era stato scelto come nuovo titolare, mentre Ivan Provedel avrebbe dovuto ricoprire il ruolo di alternativa. L’errore di Madrid non può essere sufficiente per cancellare quanto deciso soltanto poche settimane fa, ma la presenza dell’ex Lazio lascia inevitabilmente aperto il tema della concorrenza.
Provedel, d’altronde, non è un secondo qualsiasi. A 32 anni porta con sé esperienza e diverse stagioni da titolare in Serie A, oltre al premio come miglior portiere del campionato 2022/23. Chivu avrà quindi a disposizione un’alternativa affidabile qualora le difficoltà di Martínez dovessero ripetersi. Più che un cambio immediato delle gerarchie, potrebbe nascere una vera competizione per il posto.
Sbagliare, reagire, ripartire
C’è infine un aspetto della notte del Bernabeu che rischia di passare in secondo piano. Martínez ha sbagliato, ma non è uscito dalla partita. Dopo un errore del genere, contro il Real Madrid e in uno stadio che difficilmente perdona, sarebbe stato semplice perdere sicurezza. La risposta dello spagnolo è stata invece immediata, con diverse parate decisive che hanno evitato all’Inter di affondare.
Un aspetto sottolineato anche da Cristian Chivu nel post partita: «Dopo certi errori mi interessa la reazione, il body language». Da questo punto di vista, Martínez ha risposto presente.
Il problema del portiere, quindi, esiste davvero? Forse è ancora presto per definirlo tale. Madrid ha però mostrato chiaramente quale sarà una delle sfide della nuova Inter: trovare il giusto equilibrio tra quello che Martínez riesce a garantire tra i pali e ciò che Chivu gli chiede quando il pallone arriva tra i suoi piedi. Perché una notte può essere un incidente, ma se gli errori diventano un’abitudine, allora può nascere un problema.

He doesn't lack reactivity and explosiveness and he gave another demonstration of it at the Bernabeu. The difficulties emerge more when the number one is asked to transform himself into the team's first director.

The Spaniard offers greater reactivity between the posts and the possibility of finding the big save, but at the moment he does not guarantee the same security as his predecessor when involved in the construction. Inter have changed goalkeepers and, along with him, also the strengths and weaknesses of the role.

The summer hierarchies were quite defined. Martínez had been chosen as the new starter, while Ivan Provedel was supposed to play the alternative role. Madrid's mistake cannot be enough to cancel what was decided just a few weeks ago, but the presence of the former Lazio player inevitably leaves the issue of competition open.
Provedel, on the other hand, is not just any second. At 32, he brings with him experience and several seasons as a starter in Serie A, as well as the award as best goalkeeper of the 2022/23 championship. Chivu will therefore have a reliable alternative at his disposal should Martínez's difficulties repeat themselves. More than an immediate change in hierarchies, a real competition for the position could arise.

Finally, there is an aspect of the night at the Bernabeu that risks being overshadowed. Martínez made a mistake, but did not leave the match. After a mistake like that, against Real Madrid and in a stadium that is difficult to forgive, it would have been easy to lose confidence. The Spaniard's response was immediate, however, with several decisive saves that prevented Inter from sinking.
An aspect also underlined by Cristian Chivu after the match: «After certain mistakes I'm interested in the reaction, the body language». From this point of view, Martínez responded presently.
So, does the goalkeeper problem really exist? Perhaps it is still too early to define it as such. However, Madrid has clearly shown what will be one of the challenges of the new Inter: finding the right balance between what Martínez manages to guarantee between the posts and what Chivu asks of him when the ball arrives at his feet. Because one night can be an accident, but if mistakes become a habit, then a problem can arise.
