Quando il 9 Giugno di un anno fa l'Inter sceglieva Cristian Chivu come suo allenatore, il sentimento prevamente era scetticismo. Non tanto ad onor del vero legato alle potenzialità da tecnico di Chivu, da tempo tenuto d'occhio come uno dei nuovi nomi più interessanti per le panchine del futuro. In molti infatti pronosticavano un futuro di successo per il tecnico. Le perplessità erano più che altro legate al contesto, e al fatto che sembrasse, semplicemente, troppo presto. Chivu portava in dote 13 panchine, neanche una stagione completa alla guida del Parma. Troppo poche per una grande come l'Inter, pensavano molti. Soprattutto considerando l'ambiente devastato lasciato in eredità dall'amaro finale di stagione, con la sconfitta in campionato, la batosta della finale di Champions e l'addio di Simone Inzaghi a mettere duramente alla prova la fiducia di calciatori e tifosi. Un anno dopo, possiamo dirlo: il coraggio della dirigenza nerazzurra ha pagato e l'allenatore è riuscito a superare ogni aspettativa.
Un anno di successi
L'Inter doveva tornare a recuperare certezze e a vincere dopo le delusioni della precedente stagione, e Chivu non solo ha portato a casa un campionato terminato 87 punti, a 11 punti di distanza dal Napoli secondo in classifica, festeggiando il ventunesimo scudetto, ma ha anche raddoppiato con la Coppa Italia. L'ultima volta l'Inter era riuscita in questa impresa sempre con Chivu, questa volta in campo, e un certo José Mourinho in panchina nella mitica annata del Triplete. Prima di loro, solo Roberto Mancini aveva portato a casa il “double” nella panchina nerazzurra. Più dei trionfi, però, è il percorso che ha dovuto sostenere Chivu a parlare per lui.
Oltre gli ostacoli
Sarebbe facile, infatti, concentrarsi sui trionfi, sulle grandi partite giocate, e sul talento messo in campo dalla rosa nerazzurra. In realtà, a parlare di Chivu sono più che altro gli ostacoli affrontati dall'Inter in stagione: le tensioni del mondiale per club, le discussioni interne al gruppo (emblematico il caso tra Calhanoglu e Lautaro, poi diventati uomini scudetto), l'inizio in salita con due sconfitte in tre partite, e ancora le polemiche arbitrali, il trattamento riservato a Bastoni nel dopo Juventus. Tutte prove superate brillantemente dal tecnico utilizzando la sua dote migliore: intelligenza e capacità di cogliere il momento, oltre alla sua conoscenza dell'insidioso ambiente nerazzurro (aspetto sottovalutato probabilmente da molti, ma fondamentale ai fini del risultato finale). Chivu ha saputo entrare in punta di piedi in uno spogliatoio ferito e farsi accettare, non perdere la direzione e farsi risucchiare nei momenti di difficoltà, stare vicino mentalmente ai suoi giocatori (un altro esempio è l'incredibile stagione di Dimarco, o quella sorprendente di Zielinski), capire che tatticamente non era il momento di creare scossoni e cambiamenti e togliere ulteriori certezze al gruppo, ma di allinearsi con il percorso già fatto. Non ci si faccia trarre in inganno: tanti, tantissimi grandi della panchina avrebbero fallito. Questo, probabilmente, parla di Chivu più di ogni schema e questione di campo.
Il futuro
Con un fresco rinnovo di contratto, Chivu e l'Inter iniziano il nuovo anno con premesse totalmente diverse: da vincenti, con spirito alto, e la voglia di confermarsi in Itala. Con le idee ben chiare, anche su dove si possa far meglio: la piccola, unica macchia dell'eliminazione in Champions League, dove in casa nerazzurra tutti puntano a fare meglio. Da “stagista”, a tecnico acclamato: per Chivu è solo l'inizio.
When Inter chose Cristian Chivu as their coach on 9 June a year ago, the prevailing feeling was scepticism. To be honest, not so much linked to Chivu's potential as a coach, who has long been eyed as one of the most interesting new names for the benches of the future. In fact, many predicted a successful future for the coach. The doubts were mostly related to the context, and to the fact that it simply seemed too early. Chivu brought with him 13 benches, not even a full season at the helm of Parma. Too few for a team as big as Inter, many thought. Especially considering the devastated environment left behind by the bitter end to the season, with the defeat in the league, the defeat of the Champions League final and the farewell of Simone Inzaghi severely testing the trust of players and fans. One year later, we can say it: the courage of the Nerazzurri management has paid off and the coach has managed to exceed all expectations.
Un anno di successi
Inter had to return to regain certainties and win after the disappointments of the previous season, and Chivu not only brought home a championship that ended with 87 points, 11 points behind second-placed Napoli, celebrating their twenty-first scudetto, but also doubled the score with the Italian Cup. The last time Inter succeeded in this feat always with Chivu, this time on the pitch, and a certain José Mourinho on the bench in the legendary Treble year. Before them, only Roberto Mancini had brought home the "double" on the Nerazzurri bench. More than the triumphs, however, it is the path that Chivu had to endure that speaks for him.
Oltre gli ostacoli
It would be easy, in fact, to focus on the triumphs, on the great matches played, and on the talent displayed by the Nerazzurri squad. In reality, what speaks about Chivu are more than anything else the obstacles faced by Inter in the season: the tensions of the Club World Cup, the discussions within the group (the case between Calhanoglu and Lautaro, who later became Scudetto men, is emblematic), the uphill start with two defeats in three games, and again the refereeing controversies, the treatment reserved for Bastoni after Juventus. All tests passed brilliantly by the coach using his best talent: intelligence and ability to seize the moment, in addition to his knowledge of the insidious Nerazzurri environment (an aspect probably underestimated by many, but fundamental for the final result). Chivu was able to tiptoe into a wounded locker room and be accepted, not lose direction and get sucked in in moments of difficulty, stay close mentally to his players (another example is Dimarco's incredible season, or Zielinski's surprising one), understand that tactically it was not the time to create shocks and changes and remove further certainties from the group, but to align with the path already taken. Don't be fooled: many, many greats on the bench would have failed. This probably speaks more about Chivu than any scheme or field issue.
Il futuro
With a fresh contract renewal, Chivu and Inter start the new year with totally different premises: as winners, with high spirit, and the desire to confirm themselves in Italy. With very clear ideas, also on where we can do better: the small, only blemish of elimination in the Champions League, where everyone at the Nerazzurri is aiming to do better. From “intern” to acclaimed technician: for Chivu it's just the beginning.
