Era il 2018-2019, la Roma veniva eliminata agli ottavi di Champions League dal Porto dopo i tempi supplementari. Nessun tifoso avrebbe immaginato che ci sarebbero voluti 7 lunghissimi anni per rivedere la propria squadra nella massima competizione europea. Mentre aumentavano gli anni da questa assenza, cresceva la consapevolezza che sarebbe setato sempre più difficile tornare in Champions, nonostante la vittoria in Conference con Mourinho e una finale di Europa League persa che ancora grida vendetta. Ci è voluto Gasperini che dopo i miracoli compiuti con l'Atalanta, ne ha fatto un altro: riportare all'ultima giornata la Roma nel torneo più importante d'Europa. L'esordio ci sarà il 10 settembre contro il Fenerbahce e avviene dopo un inizio di campionato stupefacente che ha mostrato i veri valori di questa squadra: valori che possono portarla ad essere l'antagonista principale dell'Inter nella lotta scudetto. Ma ora l'esame europeo: il doppio impegno porterà via energia decisive per la lotta scudetto?
Roma capolista: un inizio perfetto ad opera di Gasperini
Sono bastate appena tre giornate di campionato per capire chi, forse, riuscirà a dare filo da torcere ai campioni d’Italia. Con la vittoria nel finale contro l’Atalanta di Maurizio Sarri, la Roma ha dimostrato che tutto è possibile. Il coraggio di Gasperini è stato premiato: togliere Malen in una situazione di svantaggio non è da tutti. Ma i giallorossi hanno costruito una rosa competitiva e questa ne è la dimostrazione. Castro e Soulé sono state due delle mosse decisive di una partita che sembrava destinata a prendere un’altra strada. La Roma, invece, ha continuato a crederci fino alla fine, trovando prima il pareggio e poi, al 93’, il gol che ha fatto esplodere l’intero stadio. Intanto, la Roma si gode il primo posto a punteggio pieno insieme alla squadra di Cristian Chivu, capace a sua volta di ribaltare il Napoli. È ancora presto per parlare di una corsa a due, ma i giallorossi hanno già lanciato la propria candidatura al ruolo di anti-Inter. E tra un paio di settimane sarà proprio l’Olimpico a dare una prima risposta.
Non solo Malen: Gasperini si gode le alternative e riecco Soulè
La vittoria contro l’Atalanta ha dato soprattutto una risposta importante a Gasperini: questa Roma può vincere anche senza affidarsi sempre agli stessi uomini. Malen era stato uno dei grandi protagonisti delle prime due giornate, ma questa volta il tecnico non ha avuto paura di sostituirlo per dare spazio a Castro. Una scelta coraggiosa e che racconta anche quanto siano aumentate le possibilità a disposizione dell’allenatore. Lo stesso Gasperini, al termine della partita, ha sottolineato proprio questo aspetto: “Numericamente non abbiamo una rosa da Champions. Sarà importante non avere infortuni, ma qualitativamente possiamo permetterci di fare cambi senza avere un calo. Questa sera chi è entrato ha fatto la differenza, anche dietro”. Le alternative, quindi, non mancano e contro l’Atalanta sono state proprio loro a cambiare il volto della partita. Un segnale importante per una Roma che, se vuole restare nelle zone alte della classifica, avrà bisogno del contributo di tutti. Tra queste alternative c’è soprattutto Matias Soulé. Nel corso dell’estate il classe 2003 sembrava poter lasciare la Capitale, sia per fare spazio a nuovi giocatori sia per aiutare il club a sistemare il bilancio. Alla fine è rimasto e Gasperini ha deciso di dargli fiducia. Dopo la buona prestazione contro il Lecce, accompagnata anche dal gol del momentaneo 0-3, contro l’Atalanta l’argentino ha risposto ancora presente. Entrato dalla panchina, al 93’ si è fatto trovare nel posto giusto al momento giusto, regalando alla Roma tre punti che pesano molto più di una semplice vittoria di settembre. “È entrato molto bene anche Soulé”, ha spiegato Gasperini nel post-partita. Da possibile partente a uomo decisivo: in poche settimane Soulé si è ripreso uno spazio importante e potrebbe essere proprio lui uno dei giocatori in più di questa Roma.
Roma-Inter, la sfida è già lanciata
Nove punti su nove e primo posto insieme all’Inter. È ancora presto per parlare apertamente di Scudetto, ma le prime tre giornate hanno iniziato a dare qualche indicazione. E nella stessa serata Roma e Inter hanno mandato un segnale molto simile: entrambe sono andate sotto e hanno trovato la forza per ribaltare partite complicate nel finale. I nerazzurri contro il Napoli, i giallorossi contro l’Atalanta. Vincere quando tutto sembra andare per il verso giusto è importante, riuscirci quando la partita si complica lo è ancora di più. Tra un paio di settimane saranno proprio Roma e Inter a trovarsi una di fronte all’altra all’Olimpico. Sarà soltanto l’inizio di una stagione ancora lunghissima, ma per Gasperini potrebbe già essere l’occasione giusta per capire quanto in alto può arrivare la sua Roma.
Roma, ora il test Champions League contro il Fenerbache
La partenza lanciatissima in campionato permette alla Roma di affrontare al massimo dell'entusiasmo la sfida di giovedì 10 settembre in Champions League contro il Fenerbahce, orfano di Guendouzi, ex-Lazio, squalificato dopo la partita col Lione. Alle 18:45 ci sarà un momento storico: dopo 7 lunghi anni il club giallorosso tornerà ad ascoltare quell'inno che sa di grande calcio. Gasp e i suoi uomini sono pronti a stupire ancora l'Italia e l'Europa. La sfida contro i turchi che in estate si sono rinforzati con Lukaku, che dunque incontrerà la sua ex-squadra, e Greenwood, primo grande obiettivo estivo della Roma, non è una delle più semplici: sarà un ottimo banco di prova per i giallorossi. Inoltre il doppio impegno, sopratutto negli ultimi anni ha tolto più energie che altro, rendendo più favorevole, nella corsa scudetto, chi non aveva le coppe oppure chi usciva subito. Certamente la Roma è abituata a giocare le coppe europee, ma il tasso tecnico delle avversarie che si troverà in Champions è molto più elevato e di conseguenza richiederà uno sforzo maggiore. E fin da subito ci sarà un test importantissimo, contro un Fenerbache che dal 2009 non partecipa più alla fase finale della Champions. Sia la Roma sia il Fenerbahce sono alla ricerca di una vittoria che possa dar lustro a questo ritorno nell'Europa che conta, ma entrambe si trovano di fronte un avversario ostico.
