Potenza, tecnica e inserimenti: perché piace a Mancini.
The new coach of the Italian national team is constantly on the move. One of the stops was Lisbon, part of a journey that Roberto Mancini is carrying out around Europe in search of young talents to see and, above all, to get to know and convince. A characteristic that distinguishes him from the coaches who preceded him: Mancini is always on the move, on the pitches to observe the new talents of Italian and European football live.
La missione di Mancini
The coach went to Portugal to see Issa Doumbia up close, observe him in the Sporting shirt and understand if the midfielder can become one of the new faces of Italy to come. The new course also starts with young people. Mancini has already made it clear: Italy will have to rejuvenate itself, without however giving up the need to renew ideas and aim for results. The Italian project therefore also involves the search for young players, physically and mentally ready, with significant room for growth and, above all, capable of facing responsibilities without the weight that often accompanies big names. Doumbia represents this idea perfectly.
At just 22 years old, he already has a strong upward path behind him: his training at AlbinoLeffe, his experience at Venezia, the achievement of promotion to Serie A and then the transfer to Portugal, to Sporting. The Portuguese club invested over 20 million euros to bring him to Lisbon, making him one of the most important signings of their summer. It is not a casual investment: Sporting has tied Doumbia to the club until 2031, inserting an 80 million euro release clause into the contract. A clear signal of the consideration that the Portuguese club has for the Italian midfielder.
Chi è Issa Doumbia
Born in Treviglio on 16 October 2003 to Ivorian parents, Doumbia has dual Italian and Ivorian nationality. He grew up between Ciserano and AlbinoLeffe, where he completed his youth career and made his professional debut as soon as he came of age. The move to Venezia represented the turning point. In Veneto he found continuity and minutes, he made his debut in Serie A and in the 2025/26 season he was among the protagonists of the club's promotion, finishing the championship with 8 goals and adding two more goals in the Italian Cup. Overall, with Venezia he made 63 appearances, 10 goals and 6 assists. Now the challenge has become even bigger: Lisbon, Sporting and the possibility of playing at the highest level. And, in the background, the national team. Power, technique and insertions: why Mancini likes it. Doumbia is a midfielder who impresses above all with his physical structure. He is 1.87 meters tall and weighs 84 kilos, but his physique is not the only characteristic of his game.
He is a player capable of recovering balls, dealing with tackles and at the same time accompanying the action. He has dribbling quality, a good shot and the ability to cut in. A modern profile, physically important but not static, who can interpret multiple situations within the midfield. The combination of strength, technique and ability to make an impact in the final meters is precisely what may have attracted Mancini's attention. The coach wants to understand how these qualities can also transfer to the international stage and, above all, whether Doumbia can become a pawn of the new Italian midfield. From Treviglio to Lisbon, with blue in destiny. Then there is an aspect that makes the story even more interesting. Doumbia is not a player who needs to be convinced to choose Italy: he was born in our country, he has already worn the shirt of the Italian youth selections and has always had Italy in his thoughts. And this is precisely where Mancini's philosophy fits in. The CT doesn't want to wait until young people are already established to discover them. He wants to follow them, watch them live, evaluate their growth and, when possible, anticipate the times.
