Dall'Inter all'Arsenal
Smentire i precedenti
There are games that come at the right time and others that seem to happen at the worst possible time. Napoli-Arsenal, at least on paper, belongs to the second category. The Azzurri arrive at the first European night of the season with fewer certainties than expected, after two defeats in the first three days of the championship. First the home defeat against Como, then the one against Inter, which came in the worst possible way: after being ahead 2-0, Napoli managed to come back to 3-2, with Lautaro Martinez's decisive goal arriving in the 91st minute, after an error by Zambo Anguissa which could have put the match back on track. However, the San Siro match itself can become a starting point. Because losing like this hurts, but at the same time Napoli have shown that they can put the team in difficulty with the scudetto tattooed on their chest. The problem is that against the big teams it's not enough to play well: you have to have the strength to close out matches.
Dall'Inter all'Arsenal
And now comes a team that has proven to be great in recent years. The Gunners are not exactly the opponent you would want to face to find peace of mind. Mikel Arteta's team arrives at Maradona with three victories in the first three days of the Premier League, the last obtained against Chelsea and, in addition, the recent experience of a Champions League final played a few months ago. Last May Arsenal came close to winning the cup, losing on penalties to Paris Saint-Germain after a 1-1 draw after 120 minutes. In short, the level is very high. But precisely for this reason Napoli-Arsenal is a match that can say a lot about Massimiliano Allegri's new Napoli. Maradona must above all make the difference. The Champions League in Naples is never a match like the others: it is a different night, made up of lights, pressure, noise and a stadium that can transform into the twelfth man. And against a team like Arsenal you will probably need all of this. The Azzurri will have to be aggressive, but also intelligent, because giving space can be suicidal.
Smentire i precedenti
Even the recent history of direct clashes does not particularly please Napoli. The two teams have met four times in Europe and Arsenal have won three of those matches. The last double comparison dates back to the 2019 Europa League quarter-finals, when the English eliminated the Azzurri by winning both the first leg and the second leg. Napoli's only success dates back to the 2013/14 Champions League group stage, when Higuaín and Callejón made it 2-0 at San Paolo. Napoli comes into this match needing to respond. Not necessarily in terms of qualification or ranking, because we are only at the beginning, but above all on a mental level. After the bad mood caused by the first matches, beating a Champions League finalist in front of their own fans would be the best way to completely change the tone of the start of the season, making the past quickly forgotten. On the other side there is an Arsenal who arrive confident, undefeated and with the desire to start again on the most important stage in Europe after the final they lost a few months ago. Now it's up to the Azzurri to turn the disappointment of San Siro into fuel. Because if there is a perfect night to leave again, this is probably it.
