Infinite peripezie hanno accompagnato la fase finale della sua esperienza in Campania, che si è chiusa dopo un non meno burrascoso trasferimento in Turchia, al Fenerbahce, dove è stato accolto da re.

Di apparizioni in campo pochissime, di polemiche fuori una valanga. 102 minuti giocati in tutte le competizioni, 9 presenze totali, e appena 1 gol, tra l'altro fondamentale per rilanciare le effimere ambizioni da scudetto degli azzurri, nell'anno che è stato definito il peggiore della sua vita. E non solo per le questioni personali, avendo perduto il padre Roger, ma anche dal punto di vista professionale.
Dall'infortunio allo strappo con Conte
Fin dall'avvio i presagi erano stati negativi. Lesione di alto grado al retto femorale della coscia sinistra e 160 giorni di stop. Dunque, qualche scampolo di partita alternata a qualche panchina prima della rete che avrebbe dovuto rappresentare la svolta contro il Verona. Da lì, invece, il grande buio.
Lukaku viene regolarmente convocato dalla Nazionale belga, ma decide di non partire per meglio concentrarsi sulla sua forma fisica. Una scelta lodevole, se non avesse eletto Anversa come luogo per proseguire il lavoro atletico, così disertando la chiamata del Napoli. Inevitabile lo strappo con Conte e tutto l'ambiente azzurro. Da lì in poi, nessuna convocazione e un posto fisso garantito nell'infermeria della squadra campana.

Problemi fisici? Nient'affatto, secondo Big Rom. "L'affermazione che io non sarei in forma è semplicemente falsa. Probabilmente l’hanno detta in Italia per boicottarmi. Sono al 100% in forma per giocare". E lo dimostra in Nazionale: nelle 8 partite disputate dal Belgio tra Mondiale e preparazione alla rassegna iridata, il gigante belga è sempre sceso in campo, partendo anche due volte da titolare e segnando quattro reti. Finita la Coppa del Mondo e concluse anche le vacanze estive, Lukaku lo rifà. Non si presenta al ritiro del Napoli e ottiene due giorni di permesso. Stavolta, però, il motivo è chiaro a tutti: il gigante belga vuole, e deve, cambiare aria.
Il trasferimento al Fenerbahce
Il Fenerbahce si presenta alla porta di De Laurentiis con 6 milioni di euro, tanto basta per convincere il patron azzurro a lasciarlo partire. Arrivato a Istanbul, l'accoglienza è di quelle che si riservano ai più grandi della storia: centinaia di persone lo accolgono a notte fonda all'aeroporto. “Questa è stata una delle poche volte in cui sono rimasto davvero impressionato”, ha dichiarato a tal proposito Big Rom, in campo per 8' nella prima stagionale contro il Lione nei preliminari di Champions League.
Dietro solo macerie
Adesso Lukaku è pronto per iniziare una nuova avventura in Turchia, dove resterà due anni: "Ho firmato qui al Fenerbahce per una stagione con un’opzione per un’altra, spero di poter onorare questi due anni. Dopodiché, tornerò a casa . Voglio continuare fino al 2030, anche con la Nazionale, dopo, sarà game over”. Dietro a sé, però, ancora una volta ha lasciato cumuli di macerie.
