Sette anni dopo, la Roma torna in Champions League e lo fa nel modo meno morbido possibile: dentro la bolgia del Fenerbahce, accompagnata per novanta minuti da un muro di fischi e da una pressione ambientale costante.
La squadra di Gasperini risponde con personalità per un tempo, prende campo, costruisce e passa con Cristante. Poi cambia tutto. Il Fener rientra più aggressivo, pareggia subito e mette alle corde i giallorossi, costringendoli progressivamente ad abbassarsi. Il punto resta prezioso ma racconta anche quanto questa Roma debba ancora imparare a gestire certe serate.

L’aspetto più confortante della serata è probabilmente il modo in cui la Lupa affronta la prima metà del proprio ritorno nella massima competizione europea. Il contesto è tutt’altro che semplice: il Saracoglu spinge il Fenerbahce fin dal primo pallone e trasforma ogni possesso giallorosso in una pioggia di fischi. Dopo qualche minuto necessario per prendere le misure, però, la squadra del “Gasp” non si lascia schiacciare dall’ambiente e comincia a imporre il proprio gioco. Koné dà sostanza e recuperi in mezzo, Cristante governa i tempi, mentre Dybala, Soulé e soprattutto Malen cercano di rompere la struttura turca con qualità e accelerazioni.
Il vantaggio nasce proprio da una di queste iniziative: il bomber olandese porta palla da sinistra verso il centro, attira uomini e libera Cristante, che dal limite apre il destro e trova il diagonale dell’1-0. È il premio a una Roma progressivamente cresciuta dentro la partita e capace di silenziare per qualche istante uno degli stadi più ostili della competizione. Più del gol, però, convince l’atteggiamento: niente timori reverenziali, buona gestione del possesso e la sensazione di poter controllare la gara. Una versione matura, che rende ancora più evidente il contrasto con quanto sarebbe accaduto dopo l’intervallo.

La ripresa restituisce infatti un’altra partita e, in parte, un’altra Roma. Il Fenerbahce alza immediatamente aggressività e intensità, mentre i giallorossi sembrano perdere quelle distanze che avevano permesso loro di controllare la prima frazione. Bastano pochi minuti perché Brown attacchi lo spazio alle spalle della linea, raccolga il servizio di Greenwood e superi Svilar con il tocco dell’1-1. Da quel momento la squadra di Gasperini fatica a riprendere il comando e comincia invece a subire le iniziative turche, soprattutto quando il ritmo cresce e gli spazi si allungano.
L'estremo difensore capitolino diventa allora determinante su Muriqi, mentre nel finale la traversa colpita da Skriniar evita una sconfitta che avrebbe punito oltremisura quanto di buono costruito nel primo tempo. Anche le scelte di Gasperini raccontano bene l’evoluzione del match: nel finale Malen lascia il posto a De Roon, una sostituzione chiaramente orientata a restituire equilibrio e protezione a una squadra ormai in difficoltà.
Ed è forse questo il punto più interessante da portarsi a casa. La Roma avrebbe voluto continuare a giocare ma a un certo punto ha dovuto riconoscere i propri limiti della serata e proteggere il risultato. In Champions saperlo fare non è necessariamente un difetto. Il pareggio lascia qualche rimpianto per il primo tempo, ma in un battesimo così complicato può essere considerato un punto guadagnato più che due persi.

The point remains precious but it also tells how much this Roma still has to learn to manage certain evenings.

The most comforting aspect of the evening is probably the way in which Lupa faces the first half of its return to the top European competition. The context is anything but simple: Saracoglu pushes Fenerbahce from the first ball and transforms every Giallorossi possession into a hail of whistles. After a few minutes needed to take measures, however, the "Gasp" team does not let itself be crushed by the environment and begins to impose its own game. Koné provides substance and recoveries in the middle, Cristante governs the tempo, while Dybala, Soulé and above all Malen try to break the Turkish structure with quality and acceleration.
The advantage arises precisely from one of these initiatives: the Dutch striker brings the ball from the left towards the center, attracts men and releases Cristante, who opens the right from the edge and finds the diagonal to make it 1-0. It is the reward for a Roma team that has progressively grown within the match and is capable of silencing for a few moments one of the most hostile stadiums of the competition. More than the goal, however, the attitude is convincing: no awe, good management of possession and the feeling of being able to control the match. A mature version, which makes the contrast with what would have happened after the interval even more evident.

Fenerbahce immediately raises their aggression and intensity, while the Giallorossi seem to lose the distances that allowed them to control the first half. It only takes a few minutes for Brown to attack the space behind the line, collect Greenwood's serve and overcome Svilar with the touch to make it 1-1. From that moment on, Gasperini's team struggled to regain command and instead began to suffer the Turkish initiatives, especially when the pace increased and the spaces became longer.
The Capitoline goalkeeper then becomes decisive on Muriqi, while in the final the crossbar hit by Skriniar avoids a defeat that would have punished beyond measure the good things built in the first half. Gasperini's choices also tell the story of the evolution of the match well: in the final Malen gives way to De Roon, a substitution clearly oriented towards restoring balance and protection to a team now in difficulty.
And this is perhaps the most interesting point to take home. Roma would have liked to continue playing but at a certain point they had to recognize their limitations of the evening and protect the result. In the Champions League, knowing how to do it is not necessarily a flaw. The draw leaves some regrets for the first half, but in such a complicated start it can be considered a point gained rather than two points lost.
