Conte-Napoli, it's really over: two years of glory, tensions and a farewell that leaves its mark

Antonio Conte's era at SSC Napoli officially ends. After weeks of indiscretions, half-sentences and heavy silences, the Salento coach announced his farewell to the Italian club at the end of the last day of the championship. His words were strong, in a certain sense even bitter: "In Naples I failed because I was unable to unite the environment". At the same time, however, the coach proudly claimed what was built in these two seasons: "We managed to get ahead of Milan and Juventus".

Despite everything, the balance of Conte's experience at Napoli remains important, probably even historic in some respects. The Apulian coach has brought the club back to the top of Italian football, restoring its identity, mentality and competitiveness.

Due stagioni vissute al massimo

When Antonio Conte arrived at SSC Napoli in the summer of 2024, the team was recovering from complicated months after Luciano Spalletti's Scudetto. The group seemed adrift, many big names wanted to leave and the environment had lost enthusiasm, hunger and identity. Conte immediately brought back discipline, mental intensity and work culture. The game wasn't always spectacular, but Napoli immediately returned to being competitive at a very high level.

The first season brought enthusiasm back to the square, culminating with the fourth Scudetto and with the feeling of a fierce and ambitious team returning to Europe too. The second, however, was much more complex. Napoli has experienced months full of tension, alternating great victories with sudden collapses, up to heavy European disappointments and an increasingly delicate relationship between coach, environment and critics.

“Non accompagnerò mai un morto”

Antonio Conte

In recent months Conte has often given the impression of feeling isolated. The most difficult period came after Bologna, when the coach uttered a phrase destined to leave its mark: "I simply said that I don't want to make anonymous championships. I don't make compromises and I will never make them."

Another passage that speaks well of the climate experienced in recent months was: "I will never accompany a dead person", with the coach who even went so far as to declare himself ready to step aside so as not to betray his own idea of football and competitiveness. In the end, however, the club supported him on the market and in his technical choices, trying to guarantee him footballers up to his ambitions.

The reaction of the Neapolitan people was deeply divided. A part of the fans would have liked to continue with the coach of the fourth championship, considering him one of the few coaches capable of giving a truly winning mentality to the club. At the Diego Armando Maradona stadium there was no shortage of applause and standing ovations in the last match.

On social media, however, the climate was much more heated. During the season, hashtags and criticisms against the coach exploded several times, especially after some heavy defeats and performances judged to be too defeatist. Some fans accused him of having made Napoli less brilliant and more predictable in terms of play.

Many see his farewell as the end of a project that could still have grown, especially with an important market.

The real paradox is that Conte leaves without a sensational public break with Aurelio De Laurentiis, but with the clear sensation that something has slowly cracked from within.

 E adesso cosa succede?

The future of the Salento coach remains one of the hottest topics in Italian football. There are many hypotheses. In the background there is always the possibility of a return to the Italian national football team, a solution that fascinates part of public opinion and which in recent months has also been often discussed among fans and commentators.

Other Italian benches seem less accessible today, but when Conte enters the market everything can change quickly. His image remains that of a coach capable of immediately transforming a team's mentality and competitiveness. The real doubt rather concerns the duration of his projects: in recent years his experiences have been intense, successful, but often consumed very quickly.

And SSC Napoli will now have to understand how to replace not only a coach, but above all a huge personality.

Perhaps this is precisely the mark of coaches who really change teams: they are not forgotten immediately.
