A volte mollare è davvero l’unica sconfitta
When recovery times from a knee injury get longer and longer, from months to years, you think your time on the playing field has come to an end. Loss of physical fitness and depression seem to be insurmountable obstacles, especially for those who, at the height of their career, see their future goals and life's sacrifices disappear. It is the story of Perr Schuurs. Due to the injury during the Torino-Inter match on 21 October 2023, the Dutch defender remained out of action for around 3 years. Between further problems and moments of mental weakness, the 1999 born player seems destined to have to hang up his boots, but this is not the case. After having terminated his contract with Torino, in the last two months Schuurs returned to train in his homeland, reaching an agreement with NEC Nijmegen, a Dutch team that will face Juventus in the Europa League. The best news, however, arrived last night: he made his debut with his new club during the match and, 3 years after the injury, he immediately scored the 1-3 goal, definitively closing the match. A dream return, certainly exciting for the former Torino centre-back, as well as a story to tell to anyone who is thinking of giving up.
Quel maledetto infortunio
That Perr Schuurs had the qualities to become one of the best central defenders in Europe is perhaps an exaggeration. But he had them to do well at least in Italy, that's for sure. After starting his career in Holland, playing for Ajax for 4 years, he arrives in Serie A in 2022 with good expectations. Torino bought him for around 10 million euros with the task of replacing Gleison Bremer, who was sold to Juventus that same summer. Together with Buongiorno, Schuurs built one of the most solid backlines in the league, conceding only 41 goals and ranking as the fifth best defense in the competition. The conditions for achieving something important, even on a personal level, are all there but destiny chooses differently. That match against Inter, in fact, will forever remain an open wound.
Ancora una volta Torino
Not even time to celebrate his return to the field before fate decides to bring the Dutch defender back to Turin, his old city. The Europa League draws immediately decide to let Schuurs relive a derby whose pressure he knows well, after the years spent in the ranks of Toro. In fact, Juventus - N.E.C. will be played on 17 September. Nijmegen at 9.00 pm and all of Turin, the Granata side, can't wait to welcome back the central defender, with whom he achieved one of the best results of the Cairo era. Three years ago football seemed to have turned its back on him, now it is the same field that offers him the opportunity to take back what the injury had taken away from him. Sometimes giving up is really the only defeat
