Serie A delivered its final verdicts on a final day full of excitement and twists for those who still had a goal to reach.
Champions League: Five Italian teams, no sixth
Atalanta secured at least fourth place by beating Torino 3-0. This result ousts Roma from the Champions League, relegating them to the Europa League for the third consecutive year. De Rossi’s team will therefore have to settle for competing in Europe’s second club tournament. With Atalanta in fourth place, with the possibility of third, there will be five Italian teams participating in the next Champions League.
Europa and Conference League: Torino Hopes, Lazio Confirms
Despite the defeat, Torino can still hope to participate in the Conference League, thanks to Napoli’s draw against Lecce. The granata are in ninth place, ahead of the partenopei due to the direct clashes. Should Fiorentina win the Conference League, they will be admitted to the Europa League, leaving room for Torino in the Conference. Empoli secured salvation in extremis, beating Roma in the 93rd minute and condemning Frosinone to Serie B after their defeat in the clash with Udinese. The teams that will accompany Frosinone to Serie B are Sassuolo and Salernitana. Serie A comes to a close with a day of passion and emotion, with teams celebrating qualification for the European cups and others facing the hard blow of relegation.
On a day when there have been many goodbyes such as Pioli at AC Milan, Italiano at Fiorentina, Juric at Torino and Motta at Bologna, this season will be remembered above all for the emotions that Italian football has given both in Italy, with Inter, and in Europe with Atalanta and, hopefully, Fiorentina.
