The 18th round of Serie A saw Lazio, Napoli and Fiorentina on the pitch, with different outcomes for the three teams. Lazio came back from a goal down to beat Frosinone 3-1, Napoli drew 0-0 with Monza and Fiorentina overcame Torino 1-0. Inter also dropped points against Genoa, leaving the title race wide open for Juventus.
Lazio overturns Frosinone and returns to victory in Serie A
Lazio ended 2023 with a victory after a dramatic comeback against Frosinone. The hosts took the lead in the 58th minute when Soulé converted a penalty awarded for a hand foul by Guendouzi.
However, Lazio reacted quickly and equalised in the 70th minute, with a fine header from Castellanos on Isaksen’s cross. Two minutes later, the Danish midfielder scored with a left-footed shot after a pass from the former Girona player.
Patric sealed the victory in the 84th minute after a corner kick. Lazio climb to fifth place with 31 points.
Napoli were stopped by Monza at the “Maradona”
Napoli ended 2023 with a disappointing draw against Monza, in a game that saw both managers sent off. The champions had several chances, especially with Kvaratskhelia and Anguissa, but failed to break the deadlock.
Mazzarri had Meret to thank, who parried a penalty for Pessina in the 68th minute after a foul by Mario Rui on the midfielder. Napoli remains in sixth place, with 29 points, six points behind fourth place. Monza rise to 22 points, in 14th place.
Fiorentina smiles against Torino
Fiorentina continued their impressive run, with their third consecutive 1-0 win, this time against Torino. The only goal of the match came in the 83rd minute, when Ranieri headed a Kayode cross into the net.
It was the defender’s fourth goal of the season, his first in Serie A. Fiorentina temporarily join AC Milan in third place, with 33 points, while Torino remain on 24 points, in tenth place.
Inter lose points against Genoa in serie A
Inter missed the chance to put pressure on Juventus, who face Roma tomorrow, by drawing 1-1 with Genoa. The Nerazzurri looked tired and struggled to create any clear-cut chances.
Having taken the lead in the 42nd minute, with Arnautovic’s first Serie A goal, the Nerazzurri conceded the equaliser 10 minutes later when Dragusin struck a header from a corner kick, with Sommer unable to clear it. The second half did not have much excitement, apart from a header by Acerbi parried by the Genoa goalkeeper and a shot by Arnautovic that went wide.
Inter remain in first place, with 40 points, five points ahead of Juventus, who are engaged tomorrow against Mourinho’s Roma. Genoa climb to 18 points, in 16th place, but for Gilardino there are many positive notes from his team.
