Il Paraguay è riuscito a superare la fase a gironi del Mondiale 2026, qualificandosi ai sedicesimi di finale grazie al piazzamento tra le migliori terze classificate. Decisivo lo 0-0 ottenuto contro l'Australia, seconda classificata del Gruppo D, un risultato che ha permesso all'Albirroja di conquistare i punti necessari per accedere al nuovo tabellone a 32 squadre previsto dal format del Mondiale a 48 nazionali. La selezione guidata da Gustavo Alfaro ha così chiuso il suo girone al terzo posto con quattro punti, frutto della vittoria contro la Turchia, del pareggio con l'Australia e della pesante sconfitta all'esordio contro gli Stati Uniti.
Paraguay: un ritorno atteso da 16 anni
Per il Paraguay si tratta di un traguardo dal sapore storico. L'Albirroja è tornata infatti al Mondiale sedici anni dopo l'ultima partecipazione, quella di Sudafrica 2010 che rimane ancora oggi la spedizione più memorabile nella storia della nazionale paraguayana. Il cammino in quella occasione si fermò ai quarti di finale, con la dolorosa sconfitta per 1-0 contro la Spagna, che pochi giorni dopo avrebbe conquistato il titolo mondiale. In quella squadra figuravano giocatori simbolo come Justo Villar, Paulo Da Silva, Nelson Haedo Valdez, Óscar Cardozo e Denis Caniza, alla sua quarta Coppa del Mondo.
Quella del 2026 è la nona partecipazione del Paraguay alla Coppa del Mondo. Il miglior risultato come detto resta proprio il quarto di finale del 2010, mentre l'esordio assoluto risale al Mondiale del 1930 in Uruguay.
Come è arrivata la qualificazione
Il ritorno sulla scena mondiale è stato costruito durante le qualificazioni sudamericane. Il Paraguay ha sfruttato anche l'ampliamento dei posti riservati alla CONMEBOL, conquistando il sesto e ultimo pass disponibile per la qualificazione diretta. Un traguardo ottenuto con autorità, chiudendo con ben otto punti di vantaggio sulla prima esclusa.
La vera svolta, però, è arrivata nell'agosto 2024 con l'arrivo in panchina dell'argentino Gustavo Alfaro. Quando prese in mano la squadra, il Paraguay aveva raccolto appena cinque punti nelle prime sei gare del girone. Alfaro ha cambiato immediatamente mentalità e organizzazione, debuttando con un prezioso 0-0 in casa dell'Uruguay e collezionando, nelle successive dodici partite, una sola sconfitta, arrivata a San Paolo contro il Brasile. Una rimonta che ha riportato entusiasmo e convinzione a una nazionale che era rimasta lontana dal Mondiale per oltre un decennio.
Top, flop e sorpresa dell'Albirroja
Gustavo Alfaro è senza dubbio l'artefice della rinascita dell'Albirroja. Il tecnico argentino ha costruito una squadra estremamente organizzata, compatta e difficile da affrontare, fedele alla sua idea di calcio: linee strette, grande intensità, solidità difensiva e ripartenze veloci. Dopo il pesante ko all'esordio contro gli Stati Uniti, il Paraguay ha saputo reagire con maturità, conquistando una vittoria fondamentale contro la Turchia e lo 0-0 con l'Australia che è valso il passaggio del turno.

Tra i top del torneo spicca Julio Enciso, sempre il giocatore più pericoloso e creativo della formazione sudamericana. Il talento del Brighton si è confermato il principale punto di riferimento offensivo, capace di accendere la manovra anche nei momenti più complicati. Ottimo anche il rendimento del capitano Gustavo Gómez, leader di una difesa che, dopo i quattro gol subiti all'esordio, ha ritrovato compattezza chiudendo con due clean sheet consecutivi.
SORPRESA
La vera sorpresa di queste prime tre partite è però il portiere Orlando Gill. Le sue parate sono state decisive nella vittoria contro la Turchia e nello 0-0 contro l'Australia, risultando determinanti per la qualificazione ai sedicesimi. Una crescita importante per un estremo difensore che si è imposto come uno dei protagonisti inattesi dell'Albirroja.
FLOP
Tra i flop, invece, c'è inevitabilmente la fase offensiva. Il Paraguay ha creato poche occasioni da gol e continua a dipendere quasi esclusivamente dalle giocate di Enciso. Anche Miguel Almirón, uno dei giocatori più esperti della rosa, non è ancora riuscito a incidere come ci si aspettava ed è stato addirittura espulso contro la Turchia, saltando la decisiva sfida con l'Australia. Il suo rientro contro la Germania rappresenta però una delle principali speranze di Alfaro per aumentare qualità ed esperienza nella metà campo offensiva.
Adesso la sfida con la Germania
Il prossimo ostacolo si chiama Germania. L'appuntamento è fissato per il 29 giugno alle ore 20:30 italiane al Boston Stadium, in una sfida da dentro o fuori che vede i tedeschi partire favoriti.
Non il primo confronto tra le due nazionali in un mondiale. Nel 2002, negli ottavi di finale disputati in Corea del Sud e Giappone, fu la Germania a eliminare il Paraguay grazie all'1-0 firmato da Oliver Neuville nei minuti finali. Complessivamente i precedenti sorridono ai tedeschi, che non hanno mai perso contro l'Albirroja in Coppa del Mondo.
Contro una delle grandi favorite del torneo servirà probabilmente la miglior prestazione dell'era Alfaro, ma l'Albirroja ha già dimostrato di saper sorprendere e sogna di riscrivere un'altra pagina della propria storia mondiale.

Paraguay managed to get through the group stage of the 2026 World Cup, qualifying for the round of 32 thanks to placing among the best third-placed teams. The 0-0 draw against Australia, second place in Group D, was decisive, a result that allowed Albirroja to gain the points needed to access the new 32-team draw provided by the 48-nation World Cup format. The selection led by Gustavo Alfaro thus closed their group in third place with four points, the result of the victory against Turkey, the draw with Australia and the heavy defeat on their debut against the United States.
Paraguay: un ritorno atteso da 16 anni
For Paraguay this is a historic achievement. In fact, Albirroja returned to the World Cup sixteen years after their last participation, that of South Africa 2010, which still remains the most memorable expedition in the history of the Paraguayan national team. The journey on that occasion stopped in the quarter-finals, with the painful 1-0 defeat against Spain, who would have won the world title a few days later. Paraguay also took advantage of the expansion of the places reserved for CONMEBOL, gaining the sixth and final pass available for direct qualification. A goal achieved with authority, finishing with an eight point advantage over the first place excluded.
The real turning point, however, came in August 2024 with the arrival on the bench of the Argentine Gustavo Alfaro. When he took over the team, Paraguay had collected just five points from their first six group games. Alfaro immediately changed his mentality and organization, debuting with a precious 0-0 draw at Uruguay and collecting only one defeat in the next twelve matches, which came in Sao Paulo against Brazil. A comeback that brought enthusiasm and conviction back to a national team that had remained away from the World Cup for over a decade.
Top, flop e sorpresa dell'Albirroja
Gustavo Alfaro is undoubtedly the architect of the rebirth of Albirroja. The Argentine coach has built an extremely organised, compact and difficult team to face, faithful to his idea of football: narrow lines, great intensity, defensive solidity and quick counterattacks. After the heavy defeat on their debut against the United States, Paraguay was able to react with maturity, winning a fundamental victory against Turkey and the 0-0 draw with Australia which earned them passage to the next round.

Among the tops of the tournament stands out Julio Enciso, always the most dangerous and creative player of the South American team. Brighton's talent confirmed himself as the main offensive point of reference, capable of igniting the maneuver even in the most complicated moments. The performance of captain Gustavo Gómez was also excellent, leader of a defense that, after conceding four goals on his debut, found its composure by finishing with two consecutive clean sheets.
SORPRESA
The real surprise of these first three games, however, is goalkeeper Orlando Gill. His saves were decisive in the victory against Turkey and in the 0-0 draw against Australia, proving decisive for qualification for the round of 32. An important growth for a goalkeeper who has established himself as one of the unexpected protagonists of Albirroja.
FLOP
Among the flops, however, there is inevitably the offensive phase. Paraguay created few scoring opportunities and continues to depend almost exclusively on Enciso's play. Even Miguel Almirón, one of the most experienced players in the squad, has yet to make an impact as expected and was even sent off against Turkey, missing the decisive match against Australia. However, his return against Germany represents one of Alfaro's main hopes to increase quality and experience in the attacking half of the pitch.
Adesso la sfida con la Germania
The next obstacle is called Germany. The appointment is set for June 29th at 8.30pm Italian time at the Boston Stadium, in an inside-out challenge that sees the Germans start as favourites.
Not the first match between the two national teams in a World Cup. In 2002, in the round of 16 played in South Korea and Japan, it was Germany who eliminated Paraguay thanks to a 1-0 score scored by Oliver Neuville in the final minutes. Overall, the precedents smile on the Germans, who have never lost against Albirroja in the World Cup.
Against one of the big favorites of the tournament, the best performance of the Alfaro era will probably be needed, but Albirroja has already shown that they know how to surprise and dream of rewriting another page in their world history.
