Ci sono calciatori che riempiono le bacheche. E poi ci sono calciatori che riempiono i cuori.
Igor Protti apparteneva alla seconda categoria. Si è spento oggi uno degli attaccanti più amati e prolifici della storia del calcio italiano, un uomo che ha saputo trasformare il gol in un linguaggio universale e la maglia in una seconda pelle. Aveva 58 anni e da tempo combatteva una durissima battaglia contro un tumore al colon, affrontata con la stessa dignità, lo stesso coraggio e la stessa determinazione che aveva sempre mostrato sul terreno di gioco.
Una carriera straordinaria
La sua è stata una carriera straordinaria e per certi versi irripetibile. Nato calcisticamente tra Rimini e Livorno, esplose definitivamente con la maglia del Bari, diventando il simbolo di una squadra e di una città che ancora oggi lo considera una leggenda. Nella stagione 1995-96 realizzò 24 reti in Serie A, conquistando il titolo di capocannoniere insieme a Giuseppe Signori. Un’impresa che ancora oggi conserva un valore unico: Protti resta infatti l’unico capocannoniere della Serie A ad aver ottenuto il riconoscimento con una squadra poi retrocessa a fine stagione.
Ma i numeri, per quanto importanti, raccontano soltanto una parte della sua storia.
Protti: le sue caratteristiche
Protti era un attaccante veloce, intelligente, feroce nell’attaccare l’area di rigore. Non aveva la fisicità dei grandi centravanti dell’epoca, ma compensava con un istinto naturale per il gol e una capacità rara di trovarsi sempre nel posto giusto al momento giusto. Era uno di quei giocatori che sapevano accendere la fantasia delle piazze popolari, quelle che vivono il calcio come una fede e non come un semplice spettacolo.
Dopo l’exploit barese arrivò la chiamata della Lazio. Nella Capitale visse un’esperienza diversa, forse meno esaltante rispetto ai suoi anni migliori, ma comunque significativa. In maglia biancoceleste disputò una stagione da protagonista, realizzando sette reti in campionato e contribuendo anche a una delle vittorie nel derby che i tifosi laziali ricordano ancora oggi. Successivamente passò al Napoli prima di tornare brevemente alla Lazio, in una fase della carriera in cui il calcio stava già cambiando pelle.
Se Bari lo incoronò “Zar”, fu però Livorno a renderlo immortale.
Con la maglia amaranto costruì un legame che andò oltre il calcio. Tornato in Toscana nel 1999, trascinò il club in una straordinaria risalita dalle categorie inferiori fino al ritorno nel grande calcio. Vinse la classifica marcatori in Serie C1 per due stagioni consecutive e successivamente quella di Serie B, entrando in un club esclusivissimo insieme a Dario Hübner: gli unici giocatori capaci di laurearsi capocannonieri in Serie A, Serie B e Serie C1.
Negli ultimi mesi, però, la partita più difficile non si è giocata in uno stadio.
La lotta contro un male incurabile
Da luglio 2025 aveva reso pubblica la sua lotta contro il tumore. Una battaglia affrontata senza clamore, con la compostezza che ha sempre caratterizzato il suo modo di essere uomo prima ancora che calciatore. Pochi giorni fa aveva commosso tutta l’Italia accompagnando all’altare la figlia Noemi nel giorno del matrimonio, sostenuto dal figlio Nicholas Flavio ma con il sorriso di chi, nonostante la sofferenza, voleva essere presente in uno dei momenti più importanti della vita della propria famiglia. Quelle immagini sono diventate il simbolo della sua forza e della sua straordinaria umanità.
Oggi il calcio italiano perde un grande attaccante.
Bari perde il suo Zar.
Livorno perde il suo Re.
Noi perdiamo uno degli ultimi eroi romantici di uno sport che troppo spesso dimentica il valore dei sentimenti.
Ma ci sono giocatori destinati a non andarsene mai davvero. Restano nei cori delle curve, nei racconti dei padri ai figli, nelle immagini sgranate di un’esultanza, in quel celebre trenino che ancora oggi fa sorridere chi lo ha vissuto.
Ciao Igor, grazie per averci ricordato che il calcio, prima di essere business, è passione. Prima di essere statistica, è emozione. Prima di essere spettacolo, è vita.

Igor Protti belonged to the second category. One of the most loved and prolific strikers in the history of Italian football passed away today, a man who was able to transform goals into a universal language and the shirt into a second skin. He was 58 years old and had been fighting a very tough battle against colon cancer for some time, faced with the same dignity, courage and determination that he had always shown on the pitch.
Una carriera straordinaria
His was an extraordinary and in some ways unrepeatable career. Born in football between Rimini and Livorno, he definitively exploded with the Bari shirt, becoming the symbol of a team and a city that still considers him a legend today. In the 1995-96 season he scored 24 goals in Serie A, winning the title of top scorer together with Giuseppe Signori. A feat that still has a unique value today: Protti remains the only top scorer in Serie A to have obtained the recognition with a team that was then relegated at the end of the season.
But the numbers, as important as they are, tell only part of its story.

Protti was a fast, intelligent striker, ferocious in attacking the penalty area. He didn't have the physicality of the great center forwards of the time, but he made up for it with a natural instinct for scoring and a rare ability to always be in the right place at the right time. He was one of those players who knew how to ignite the imagination of the popular squares, those who experience football as a faith and not as a simple spectacle.
After Bari's exploit, the call from Lazio arrived. In the capital he had a different experience, perhaps less exciting than his best years, but still significant. In the Biancoceleste shirt he played a leading season, scoring seven goals in the championship and also contributing to one of the victories in the derby that Lazio fans still remember today. He subsequently moved to Napoli before returning briefly to Lazio, at a stage of his career in which football was already changing its skin.
If Bari crowned him "Tsar", it was Livorno that made him immortal.
With the amaranth shirt he built a bond that went beyond football. Returning to Tuscany in 1999, he dragged the club on an extraordinary rise from the lower categories to its return to big football. He won the top scorer ranking in Serie C1 for two consecutive seasons and subsequently that of Serie B, joining a very exclusive club together with Dario Hübner: the only players capable of becoming top scorers in Serie A, Serie B and Serie C1.
In recent months, however, the most difficult match was not played in a stadium.

Since July 2025 he had made his fight against cancer public. A battle faced without fanfare, with the composure that has always characterized his way of being a man even before being a footballer. A few days ago he had moved all of Italy by accompanying his daughter Noemi to the altar on her wedding day, supported by his son Nicholas Flavio but with the smile of someone who, despite the suffering, wanted to be present in one of the most important moments of his family's life. Those images have become the symbol of his strength and his extraordinary humanity.
Today Italian football loses a great striker.
Bari loses its Tsar. Livorno loses its King. We lose one of the last romantic heroes of a sport that too often forgets the value of feelings.
But there are players destined to never really leave. They remain in the choruses of the curves, in the stories of fathers to their children, in the grainy images of an exultation, in that famous train that still today makes those who experienced it smile.
Hi Igor, thanks for reminding us that football, before being a business, is a passion. Before being statistics, it is emotion. Before being entertainment, it is life.
