Orlando Gill, portiere paraguaiano eroe dei Mondiali che con la sua Nazionale ha eliminato la Germania, sarebbe stato offerto all’Inter pochi giorni fa. Per la dirigenza interista questo vorrebbe dire rivedere il progetto, già da tempo avviato, di acquistare Ivan Provedel, secondo della Lazio, che dovrebbe affiancare,come portiere esperto, Josep Martinez nella prossima stagione.
Chi è Orlando Gill
26 anni, 1,99m di altezza, il giocatore paraguaiano all’inizio della sua esperienza calcistica non è portiere. Tra il 2012 e il 2013, nel club 13 de Junio della sua città natale, gioca da centrocampista.
Il passaggio tra i pali è dovuto tanto al caso quanto alla necessità. "Ho sempre sognato di giocare a calcio. All’inizio giocavo attaccante. Poi un giorno mi hanno dato una scelta: o andavo in porta, o restavo in panchina. Ho scelto la porta... e all’inizio la porta non ha scelto me! Prendevo parecchi gol. Era difficile, ma ho insistito", racconta il portiere.
L’esordio tra i professionisti avviene il 27 settembre 2020, in una sconfitta per 3-0 contro il Libertad nella División Profesional paraguaiana.
I primi passi sono duri, e non solo in campo.
Circa 3-4 anni fa nasce suo figlio Lautaro, ma la situazione economica della famiglia è molto grave: i soldi mancano e le cure di cui necessita il bambino (che ha gravi problemi di salute) lo costringono a vendere tutto il materiale ricevuto dalle varie squadre in cui ha giocato per coprire le spese mediche del neonato. Maglie, attrezzature, scarpe. Persino la maglia della nazionale U20, di cui non conserva alcun ricordo materiale.
Il trasferimento in Argentina
Nel gennaio del 2024, passa al CA San Lorenzo de Almagro, in Argentina. Dalla seconda divisione paraguaiana alla squadra riserve di un club storico argentino.
Un anno intero nella squadra B, agli ordini di Damián Ayude, con una squadra che chiude da vicecampione. Il suo livello gli apre le porte del gruppo professionistico per l’ultima partita del 2024. Trasferito a titolo definitivo nel gennaio 2025, si impone come titolare indiscusso. Con 13 gol subiti nella stagione di Liga Profesional, vanta la seconda miglior difesa del campionato argentino, dietro solo al Rosario Central e al Deportivo Riestra. Il Ciclón, trascinato da una generazione di giovani, arriva in semifinale di Apertura e Gill ne è protagonista.
Nel settembre 2025, il commissario tecnico Gustavo Alfaro lo convoca per la prima volta in nazionale maggiore. Esordisce il 9 settembre contro il Perù in una vittoria per 1-0. Da lì in poi, la sua ascesa è continua fino alla lista dei 26 per il Mondiale 2026, dove il Paraguay disputa la sua prima Coppa del Mondo dopo sedici anni.
Gill e il suo primo Mondiale
Il Paraguay inizia il Mondiale 2026 con una pesante sconfitta (1-4) contro gli Stati Uniti nella prima partita della fase a gironi.
Arriva poi un pareggio per 0-0 contro l’Australia, in cui Orlando Gill mette a segno 5 parate decisive.
Mantiene la porta inviolata anche nella sfida contro la Turchia. Nelle tre partite del girone, colleziona ben 13 parate.
Ai sedicesimi il Paraguay affronta la Germania: il risultato rimane sull’1-1 anche dopo i tempi supplementari, si va alla lotteria dei rigori. Ed è qui che Gill si rende protagonista: con due rigori parati ai tedeschi, il portiere viene eletto MVP della partita e la sua squadra raggiunge gli ottavi di finale, nei quali incontrerà la Francia sabato 4 luglio alle 23.
Futuro in nerazzurro?
Il rendimento di Gill, valutato 6 milioni di euro, non è passato inosservato. Chissà se questo exploit farà riflettere i dirigenti dell’Inter su un suo possibile acquisto o se invece si continuerà con l’operazione Provedel. Quest’ultimo, 32 anni, italiano, interista, valutato 3 milioni, rappresenta sicurezza e affidabilità, ma le ultime prestazioni del paraguaiano fanno sognare….
L’ipotesi Gill rimane al momento piuttosto remota, tutto sembra andare in direzione Provedel, ma chissà che i miracoli al mondiale non abbiano acceso una lampadina.
