Era naturale che il Mondiale a 48 squadre avrebbe regalato delle sorprese, ma neanche nella più fervida delle immaginazioni si sarebbe potuto concepire una cosa del genere. Il 90% delle compagini africane ha raggiunto il primo turno eliminatorio, riscrivendo le statistiche calcistiche di un continente che a livello mondiale non aveva mai detto la sua e solo negli ultimi decenni ha veramente iniziato a far vedere di che pasta è fatto. Le squadre, trascinate dai loro giocatori più rappresentativi e dalla loro grande forza collettiva, dovranno dimostrare a tutti che non è stato un caso questo strabiliante inizio di Mondiale.

Il risultato migliore per un’africana resta quello del 2022, con una semifinale di un Marocco favoloso e strabiliante dal punto di vista del gioco, che chiuderà poi quel torneo al quarto posto. E anche quest’anno il Marocco è in corsa, anche se ai sedicesimi dovrà incontrare i Paesi Bassi, avversario arduo. Le altre 8 che accedono al turno sono: Algeria, Capo Verde, Costa d’Avorio, Egitto, Ghana, Repubblica Democratica del Congo, Senegal e Sudafrica. Solo la Tunisia non è riuscita a centrare questo obiettivo.
Per Capo Verde era una prima assoluta, relegata dai bookmakers a ruolo di vittima sacrificale, ha stupito tutti e si giocherà gli ottavi contro l’Argentina campione in carica. Le altre avevano almeno partecipato una volta, come la Repubblica Democratica del Congo che però non era riuscita a fare nemmeno un punto nella precedente apparizione. Stupiscono di meno Costa d’Avorio, Ghana e Senegal, che hanno avuto nella storia grandi giocatori e hanno provato già a fare dei risultati di un certo livello, come i quarti raggiunti dal Senegal nel 2002 e dai ghanesi nel 2010.

Certamente il Marocco di Hakimi e Saibari resta la più fra tutte queste, ma è indubbio che la squadra che ha giocato il miglior calcio è la Costa d’Avorio, che incontrerà la Norvegia nel primo turno e sarà sicuramente un match combattuto. Gli ivoriani trascinati da Diomande e Pépé hanno ammaliato tutti col loro calcio frizzante e esotico.
Chance anche per il Senegal che se la vedrà con un Belgio che è la copia sbiadita delle passate kermesse. I senegalesi si affidano all’esperienza di Mané e ai gol di Sarr. L’Algeria di Mahrez troverà la Svizzera, altro match equilibrato, mentre l’Egitto di Salah è la favorita contro l’Australia. Il Ghana cercherà in tutti i modi di difendersi contro la Colombia magari sperando di arrivare alla lotteria dei calci di rigore, invece la Repubblica Democratica del Congo incontra gli inglesi in un match molto difficile e infine il Sudafrica. I Bafana Bafana sono già scesi in campo nelle ultime ore nella gara che ha dato avvio alla fase a eliminazione diretta contro una delle nazioni ospitanti, il Canada e sono stati beffati nel finale. Il sogno ottavi si è infranto con un gol nel recupero di Eustaquio.
Guardando alle combinazioni possibili che le aspettano in caso di vittoria, il percorso più facile, almeno fino ai quarti, dovrebbero avercelo Algeria e Ghana, che vincendo si incontrerebbero agli ottavi. Insomma gli ingredienti ci sono tutti per vedere un bellissimo spettacolo e le africane daranno filo da torcere a tutte. Aspettiamoci grandi sorprese e non ci resta altro che mettersi comodi e godersi le emozioni che solo il Mondiale ci può regalare.
