Dopo 16 anni, 130 partite e 80 gol segnati con la maglia del Brasile addosso è arrivato il momento di mettere la parola fine alla storia di Neymar con la Nazionale carioca. Un romanzo fatto di alti e bassi, soddisfazioni personali e delusioni di squadra. Ma ora, a 34 anni, è arrivato il momento di dire basta.
"Ci ho provato, ci ho provato. Ora è finita. Ho iniziato qui, ho finito qui…", le sofferte parole del pluricampione brasiliano al termine dell'eliminazione contro la Norvegia arrivata sul campo del MetLife Stadium. E forse è uno scherzo del destino, o la chiusura perfetta del cerchio, il fatto che il sipario sulla carriera di Neymar in Nazionale sia calato proprio sullo stesso prato verde su cui aveva scritto la prima pagina della sua avventura con la Seleçao, avendo qui esordito il 10 agosto 2010 nell'amichevole contro gli Stati Uniti.
Un'epoca avara di soddisfazioni
Naufragano così anche i sogni dei tifosi verdeoro, che vedevano in Neymar l'erede naturale di Pelè. Nonostante le magie in campo, i trofei sono mancati. A parte una Confederations Cup conquistata nel 2013 e un oro olimpico nel 2016, le gioie sono state decisamente meno numerose dei dolori: infinite delusioni in Coppa del Mondo, in cui resta indelebile il 7-1 inferto dalla Germania nella semifinale del torneo casalingo, e la doccia fredda del secondo posto nella Copa America 2021, alle spalle dei rivali dell'Argentina.

Resterà l'immagine di un campione ferito nel talento e nell'orgoglio, costretto a un'umiliante sfida personale con Nyland, portiere 35enne svincolato della Norvegia, all'atto di battere il rigore e il nervosismo che ha contraddistinto gli ultimi atti della sua carriera in verdeoro.
Resterà il “non a me” urlato all'estremo difensore dopo l'ottantesima rete segnata con la Nazionale. Parole che ricordano al mondo intero che chiunque sarà cancellato dalle pagine di storia del calcio. Ma non lui. Non Neymar da Silva Santos Júnior, o, più semplicemente, Neymar.
