Nonostante manchi una partita al termine del girone D, il sogno americano della Turchia si è spento. Le due sconfitte rimediate sono state fatali, costringendo la Nazionale ottomana ad abbandonare le speranze di disputare i sedicesimi. L’ultimo (inaspettato) ko contro il Paraguay ha lasciato stupito l’intero Paese che avrebbe voluto un esito diverso.
Colpaccio Paraguay e delusione turca
Reduce dal pesante 2-0 all’esordio con l’Australia, gli uomini di Montella erano costretti a fare risultato per migliorare la classifica, ma ciò non è avvenuto. Nella meravigliosa cornice del San Francisco Bay Arena di Santa Clara, il gol siglato da Matías Galarza ( conclusione letale dalla distanza su assist di Enciso) ha permesso al Paraguay di vincere 0-1. Tra chances sprecate e la traversa-palo colpita da Muldur, il parziale non è cambiato decretando così l’eliminazione della Mezzaluna.
Sul finire del primo tempo, svolta storica applicata grazie al nuovo regolamento: l’arbitro Barton richiamato al VAR ha espulso il centrocampista paraguaiano Almirón, per essersi messo la mano alla bocca mentre parlava. Incredibilmente la formazione sudamericana potrebbe proseguire il cammino nella competizione, se superasse l’ostacolo Australia venerdì prossimo.
Mix di sfortuna e imprecisione
Durante queste prime due gare, Calhanoglu e compagni hanno creato una valanga di occasioni senza però esultare nemmeno una volta. 0 reti con 62 tiri totali, un record in negativo su cui si è soffermato il CT Vincenzo Montella:
“Sono nel mondo del calcio professionistico da 35 anni. Normalmente, una partita del genere capita una volta ogni 50 partite, ma è sorprendente che sia successa in due partite consecutive. Ci sono stati 62 tiri in due partite. Non sto nemmeno parlando delle percentuali di possesso palla. Il destino non era dalla nostra parte. Ho detto ai miei giocatori che hanno dato il massimo in campo e che dovrebbero tenere la testa alta. Non c'è modo di sfuggire al destino".
Rammarico espresso ai microfoni anche dal difensore ex Juventus, Merih Demiral:
“Nel calcio succedono queste cose. Ci sono i giorni belli e quelli brutti. Avremmo potuto fare molto meglio, avremmo potuto passare il turno. La responsabilità è interamente nostra. Chiedo sinceramente scusa a tutto il nostro popolo”
Montella ai saluti?
Terminata l’avventura Nordamericana, le strade tra l’allenatore 52enne e la Federazione Turca dovrebbero separarsi: da capire poi le modalità dell’addio, tramite esonero o dimissioni. Mister Montella può comunque ritenersi soddisfatto, avendo portato la Mezzaluna alla Coppa del Mondo dopo 24 anni di assenza (l’ultima partecipazione risaliva a Corea-Giappone 2002), senza dimenticare gli Europei del 2024 conclusi ai quarti di finale.
La Turchia sfiderà il 26 giugno i padroni di casa degli Stati Uniti, cercando di concludere il Mondiale a testa alta.
Although there is one match left at the end of group D, Turkey's American dream has been extinguished. The two defeats suffered were fatal, forcing the Ottoman national team to abandon their hopes of playing in the round of 32. At the end of the first half, a historic turning point was applied thanks to the new regulation: referee Barton, called to VAR, sent off the Paraguayan midfielder Almirón for putting his hand to his mouth while speaking. Incredibly, the South American team could continue their journey in the competition if they overcome the Australian obstacle next Friday.

During these first two matches, Calhanoglu and his teammates created an avalanche of chances without celebrating even once. 0 goals with 62 total shots, a negative record on which coach Vincenzo Montella focused:
"I have been in the world of professional football for 35 years. Normally, a game like this happens once in 50 games, but it is surprising that it happened in two consecutive games. There were 62 shots in two games. I'm not even talking about possession percentages. Fate was not on our side. I told my players that they gave their all on the pitch and that they should keep their heads high. There is no way to escape fate."
Regret also expressed to the microphones by the former Juventus defender, Merih Demiral:
"These things happen in football. There are good days and bad days. We could have done much better, we could have gone through. The responsibility is entirely ours. I sincerely apologize to all our people"
Montella ai saluti?
Once the North American adventure is over, the paths between the 52-year-old coach and the Turkish Federation should separate: the modalities of the farewell, through dismissal or resignation, will then be understood. Mister Montella can still consider himself satisfied, having brought the Mezzaluna to the World Cup after 24 years of absence (the last participation dates back to Korea-Japan 2002), without forgetting the 2024 European Championships which ended in the quarter-finals.
Turkey will challenge the hosts United States on June 26, trying to finish the World Cup with their heads held high.
