Stefan De Vrij ha salutato il club nerazzurro scegliendo di iniziare una nuova avventura con il Panathinaikos, rifiutando la possibilità di prolungare ancora per una stagione il proprio contratto con la società milanese.
Otto anni, 296 presenze, nove trofei conquistati e un posto assicurato nella storia recente dell'Inter. Una decisione che ha sorpreso molti tifosi, ma che il difensore olandese ha spiegato con parole molto chiare: la necessità di sentirsi nuovamente protagonista.

"Il mio contratto era in scadenza e volevo tornare a essere un giocatore importante. Purtroppo l'anno scorso all'Inter ho giocato poco."
Parole che non rappresentano un attacco diretto alla società, ma che lasciano trasparire una comprensibile amarezza. De Vrij non ha mai alimentato polemiche pubbliche durante la stagione, accettando sempre con grande professionalità le decisioni tecniche. È però evidente che il ridotto minutaggio abbia avuto un peso determinante nella sua scelta di lasciare Milano. Con Cristian Chivu il difensore ha trovato meno spazio rispetto al passato, disputando appena una ventina di partite ufficiali e finendo spesso tra le riserve. Perché ha scelto proprio il Panathinaikos
Dietro la scelta della Grecia non c'è soltanto un contratto.
Lo stesso difensore ha raccontato di essere rimasto conquistato dal progetto del Panathinaikos e dalla città di Atene.
"Ho scoperto uno storico club che non vince da tanto tempo, ma che sta costruendo qualcosa di importante con una nuova dirigenza e un allenatore giovane e moderno. Questo mi ha convinto."
Poi ha aggiunto un dettaglio che racconta il lato più personale della sua decisione:
"Ero stato in vacanza ad Atene. È una città fantastica. Ha avuto il suo peso nella mia scelta."
Per De Vrij la Grecia rappresenta quindi molto più di una semplice destinazione di fine carriera. È un Paese che apprezza profondamente, una realtà nella quale vuole vivere un'esperienza diversa e contribuire da protagonista alla rinascita di uno dei club più prestigiosi del calcio ellenico.
Un addio senza strappi, ma con qualche rimpianto
Ufficialmente tra l'Inter e il forte centrale non c'è mai stata una rottura. Il club lo ha salutato con un lungo messaggio di ringraziamento, ricordando gli otto anni ricchi di successi e il contributo determinante alla conquista di tre Scudetti, tre Coppe Italia e tre Supercoppe Italiane.

However, it is clear that the reduced playing time had a decisive impact on his choice to leave Milan. A situation which, in all likelihood, also affected his chances of being called up by the Dutch national team for the World Cup, fueling considerable personal disappointment.

The paradox is that the Dutchman leaves Inter as Italian champions, but also after one of the least satisfying seasons from a personal point of view.
With Cristian Chivu the defender found less space than in the past, playing just around twenty official matches and often ending up among the reserves. An unusual situation for someone who, from 2018 onwards, had been one of the pillars of the Nerazzurri defense under the guidance of Luciano Spalletti, Antonio Conte and Simone Inzaghi.

The defender himself said he was won over by the Panathinaikos project and the city of Athens.
"I discovered a historic club that hasn't won for a long time, but that is building something important with a new management and a young, modern coach. This convinced me."
Then he added a detail that tells the more personal side of his decision:
"I had been on holiday in Athens. It's a fantastic city. It played a role in my choice."
For De Vrij, Greece therefore represents much more than a simple end-of-career destination. It is a country that he deeply appreciates, a reality in which he wants to live a different experience and contribute as a protagonist to the rebirth of one of the most prestigious clubs in Greek football.

Officially there has never been a rift between Inter and the central club. The club greeted him with a long message of thanks, recalling the eight years full of successes and the decisive contribution to the conquest of three Scudetti, three Italian Cups and three Italian Super Cups.
For his part, De Vrij never raised his voice. He continued to train professionally, respecting every technical decision. In the end, however, he chose to follow his ambitions: instead of remaining another season in the alternative role, he preferred to start again from a project that guaranteed him trust, continuity and a leading role.
