Il neo Presidente della FIGC, Giovanni Malagó, è in pressing su Paolo Maldini per affidargli il ruolo di Direttore Tecnico della Nazionale Italiana. Prima ancora della scelta del nuovo CT, è necessaria una figura che aiuti Malagó nel suo compito, e chi meglio dell’ex difensore azzurro potrebbe svolgere questo ruolo?
“Voglio condividere le mie decisioni con qualcuno che di calcio ne sappia più di me. Sono vicino alla persona giusta. Maldini? Non posso confermare nè smentire, ma ha tutti i requisiti”.
La risposta della bandiera rossonera è attesa a breve, entro venerdì, al massimo la fine del weekend. La proposta lo affascina, essere il collante fra il campo e i piani alti pure, ma ci sono da risolvere degli impegni presi in precedenza alla chiamata federale.
Una nazionale tutta da ricostruire
Mentre le principali Nazionali sono impegnate a cercare di conquistare la Coppa del Mondo tra Canada, Messico e Stati Uniti, l’Italia (la cui ultima partecipazione ad un Mondiale risale al 2014) cerca di ricostruirsi partendo dalle fondamenta. Dopo le dimissioni di Gravina dalla presidenza della Figc due giorni dopo la disfatta degli azzurri contro la Bosnia (lo scorso 31 marzo), che ha sancito l’esclusione degli uomini di Gattuso dalla partecipazione ai Mondiali per la terza volta consecutiva, a fine giugno Giovanni Malagó è stato eletto Presidente Federale.
Il momento è delicato, le questioni sulle quali intervenire complicate: riportare la Nazionale Italiana ad alti livelli di competitività, scegliere un nuovo commissario tecnico, valorizzare i giovani, affrontare il tema stadi e l’avvicinamento ad Euro 2023.
L’ex Presidente del CONI ha individuato in Paolo Maldini la figura giusta per aiutarlo in questo arduo compito. Finora l’ex azzurro non ha mai detto sì a questa proposta, ma sembra essersi aperto uno spiraglio e filtra ottimismo. Malagò è stato chiaro: entro la fine della settimana deve arrivare la decisione definitiva. Negli anni passati già due volte è stato vicino a tornare in Nazionale in altre vesti, ma poi non se ne fece nulla.
Ora Malagò è sicuro, o si mostra tale, di riuscire a convincerlo ad accettare il doppio ruolo di DT e Presidente del Club Italia. Una doppia veste, di campo e politica, che coniuga alla perfezione l'esperienza maturata da calciatore e da dirigente del Milan.
Conte o Mancini?
Per la scelta del nuovo CT azzurro attualmente è corsa a due: Roberto Mancini o Antonio Conte, due allenatori che conoscono già Coverciano e la pressione della panchina azzurra.
“Il ritratto del CT ideale? Condizione imprescindibile è vedere subito l’entusiasmo, la convinzione di sposare un’idea. Non deve farlo solo per soldi. Ho bisogno di qualcuno convinto almeno per i prossimi due anni. Straniero? Mai dire mai.”
Conte è il profilo sponsorizzato dalla Lega Serie A e accetterebbe uno stipendio da 4 milioni netti all’anno (la metà del suo ultimo ingaggio percepito dal Napoli). Mancini “si accontenterebbe” di circa 2 milioni annuali, e il suo ritorno potrebbe rappresentare quel “gesto d’amore” evocato dalle parole di Malagò, col quale ha rapporti di amicizia da diversi anni. La “fuga” in Arabia del tecnico jesino resta un passaggio da superare nei rapporti con ambiente tifosi e federazione.
Se Maldini accetterà il ruolo di Direttore Tecnico, la palla passerà a lui, che ha un ottimo rapporto con entrambi: con Mancini fece il militare a Barletta, con Conte ha diviso lo spogliatoio azzurro. Non sono esclusi tuttavia nuovi nomi per la panchina azzurra “Nella vita, quando i tempi sono stretti e i problemi sono grossi, uno un piano B e magari anche uno C ce l’ha”. Le nomine ufficiali per le due caselle dell’organigramma azzurro dovrebbero essere ufficializzate entro la prossima settimana.
EURO 2032
Il 31 luglio scade il termine per indicare all’UEFA i cinque impianti italiani idonei ad ospitare gli Europei del 2032 in condivisione con la Turchia. Anche su questo punto Malagò si è mostrato fiducioso: “Gli Europei rappresentano un’opportunità per il nostro Paese: ci potranno essere degli stadi pronti a supportare i cinque impianti iniziali. I grandi eventi obbligano in un modo stringente”.
A questo proposito, nei prossimi giorni è previsto un vertice tra lo stesso Malagò e il presidente dell’organizzazione europea, Aleksander Ceferin, oltre ad un nuovo incontro con il ministro italiano dello sport Andrea Abodi.

Una nazionale tutta da ricostruire
While the main national teams are busy trying to win the World Cup between Canada, Mexico and the United States, Italy (whose last participation in a World Cup dates back to 2014) is trying to rebuild itself starting from the foundations. After Gravina's resignation from the presidency of the FIGC two days after the defeat of the Azzurri against Bosnia (last March 31st), which sanctioned the exclusion of Gattuso's men from participating in the World Cup for the third consecutive time, at the end of June Giovanni Malagó was elected Federal President. The moment is delicate, the issues on which to intervene are complicated: bringing the Italian national team back to high levels of competitiveness, choosing a new technical commissioner, valorising young people, dealing with the stadium theme and the approach to Euro 2023.
The former CONI President identified Paolo Maldini as the right figure to help him in this arduous task. So far the former Italian player has never said yes to this proposal, but a glimmer of hope seems to have opened up and optimism is filtering through. Malagò was clear: the final decision must arrive by the end of the week. In the past few years he has already been close to returning to the national team in other capacities twice, but then nothing came of it. Now Malagò is sure, or appears so, of being able to convince him to accept the dual role of DT and President of Club Italia. A dual role, on the pitch and in politics, which perfectly combines the experience gained as a footballer and as a manager of Milan.
Conte o Mancini?
For the choice of the new Azzurri coach there is currently a two-way race: Roberto Mancini or Antonio Conte, two coaches who already know Coverciano and the pressure of the Azzurri bench.
"The portrait of the ideal coach? An essential condition is to immediately see the enthusiasm, the conviction of embracing an idea. It must not be done just for money. I need someone convinced at least for the next two years. Foreigner? Never say never."
Conte is the profile sponsored by the Lega Serie A and would accept a salary of 4 million net per year (half of his last salary received from Napoli). Mancini would "be satisfied" with around 2 million per year, and his return could represent that "gesture of love" evoked by the words of Malagò, with whom he has had a friendly relationship for several years. The "escape" of the Jesi coach to Arabia remains a step to overcome in relations with the fan environment and the federation.
If Maldini accepts the role of Technical Director, the ball will pass to him, who has an excellent relationship with both: with Mancini he served in Barletta, with Conte he shared the Azzurri dressing room. However, new names for the Italian bench are not excluded. "In life, when times are tight and problems are big, one has a plan B and maybe even a C." The official appointments for the two boxes of the blue organization chart should be made official within the next week.
EURO 2032
The deadline for indicating to UEFA the five Italian venues suitable to host the 2032 European Championships shared with Turkey expires on 31 July. On this point too, Malagò was confident: "The European Championships represent an opportunity for our country: there may be stadiums ready to support the five initial facilities. Major events are very demanding."
In this regard, a summit is expected in the next few days between Malagò himself and the president of the European organisation, Aleksander Ceferin, as well as a new meeting with the Italian sports minister Andrea Abodi.
