Le volpi del deserto dovranno affrontare la Svizzera, vecchia conoscenza per il tecnico degli africani Vladimir Petkovic, che ha trionfato nel proprio girone da imbattuta superando Canada, Bosnia e Qatar e conquistandosi una qualificazione serena alla fase ad eliminazione. Il calcio d'inizio dell'incontro sarà fissato per le 5 del mattino (ora italiana) del 3 Luglio a Vancouver.

Per l'Algeria, invece, la qualificazione ai sedicesimi è stata certamente più movimentata. Nel gruppo J si è classificata al terzo posto con 4 punti, dietro ad Argentina (prima con 9 punti) ed Austria (anch'essa a 4 punti, ma seconda per via della migliore differenza reti) e davanti alla Giordania ultima a 0 punti. Nelle tre partite del torneo, ha incassato una sconfitta per 3 reti a 0 all'esordio contro l'Argentina, entrata nella storia per la tripletta di Leo Messi. A rimettere la qualificazione sulla retta via è stata la vittoria per 2 reti a 1 contro la Giordania grazie alle reti di Benbouali e Gouiri. Tutto si è deciso nello spettacolare ultimo match contro l'Austria: gli europei sono passati in vantaggio con Arnautovic, ma Belghali ha pareggiato i conti. Sabitzer ha riportato avanti l'Austria, ma poi Mahrez ha prima siglato la rete del 2 a 2 e poi al 93' fatto assaporare alle volpi del deserto la qualificazione come seconda in classifica siglando le reti del 3 a 2. Al 96', però, proprio allo scadere, la rete di Kalajdzic ha portato il risultato sul 3 a 3 finale permettendo all'Austria di mantenere il secondo posto in classifica. L'Algeria si è comunque potuta consolare passando il turno come una delle migliori terze del torneo.
Top e flop dell'Algeria
L'estro offensivo non manca nell'Algeria, soprattutto se si parla di Mahrez, che ha risposto presente alla difficile prova mondiale. Promosso anche Aouar, che soprattutto contro l'Austria ha dato prova delle sue qualità. Da rivedere, invece, la difesa, che con 7 gol presi in 3 partite si è rivelata tutt'altro che imperforabile. Anche per via del secondo “flop” della squadra: il reparto portieri non ha mai convinto in questo mondiale, nonostante i cambiamenti del tecnico.
