Il protagonista assoluto della fase a gironi è stato Nestory Irankunda. L'esterno offensivo ha impressionato per velocità e forza fisica, tanto da ricordare per accelerazione Usain Bolt. Una qualificazione in rimonta
Il percorso verso il Mondiale non è stato semplice. Dopo aver dominato il secondo turno delle qualificazioni asiatiche con sei vittorie consecutive senza subire gol, l'Australia ha iniziato male il terzo turno perdendo contro il Bahrain e pareggiando con l'Indonesia. Risultati che hanno portato alle dimissioni di Graham Arnold.
