Charles Leclerc si racconta alla vigilia del GP di Barcellona: il rinnovo con la Ferrari, la delusione di Monaco e il rapporto con Hamilton e Antonelli
Charles Leclerc, alla sua ottava stagione in Rosso, parla del rinnovo di contratto appena firmato: "Il mio cuore starà con la Ferrari fino alla fine della mia vita. Ma ho scelto di rimanere anche con la testa. Dopo anni insieme con la squadra non poteva essere solo amore, che per me è indiscutibile e per il quale avrei comunque firmato. È che crescendo pensi di più e vuoi fare le scelte giuste, soprattutto in un momento così importante della mia carriera. Con la ragione ho capito che era la cosa migliore per me".
Nonostante altre offerte e la consapevolezza che il Mondiale piloti a Maranello manca da quasi 20 anni, la convinzione di Leclerc non è mai vacillata: "No, dubbi non ne ho mai avuti. Ci sono state delle opzioni, alcuni sono venuti a proporsi, è stato sensato considerare. Riflettendoci, la mia risposta è stata molto chiara" le parole a La Repubblica.
A convincere definitivamente il monegasco della bontà del progetto è stata la gestione sportiva: "Credo nel team e in Fred Vasseur. Sta costruendo da anni un gruppo, ma questa è la prima volta che è la sua squadra a sviluppare una macchina completamente nuova. Il cambio di approccio già si è visto con tante innovazioni, ne arriveranno tante altre. E io sono a bordo di questa visione".
Col rinnovo firmato, ora bisogna pensare a Barcellona. Voltare pagina dopo lo zero di Monaco è fondamentale, anche se l'amarezza per l'incidente nella gara di casa è ancora viva: "Ho imparato quello che sapevamo da un po', purtroppo l'ho pagata cara. La soluzione che uso qui non credo sia una rivoluzione, ma spero mi dia soddisfazioni".
Il weekend spagnolo servirà anche per misurare la crescita della Ferrari e il feeling dei suoi piloti con le attuali monoposto. Leclerc ha speso parole di grande stima per Lewis Hamilton, sottolineando le difficoltà di adattamento superate dal britannico: "Le macchine di prima erano molto particolari, queste nuove lo sono anche per la power unit. Un pilota di F1 si deve adattare. Lewis sta facendo un grande lavoro in un anno così, è molto forte, lo è sempre stato".
Infine, una battuta sul dualismo nel cuore dei tifosi italiani, attualmente divisi tra l'amore per la Ferrari e l'entusiasmo per le vittorie del giovane connazionale Kimi Antonelli sulla Mercedes. Un dualismo che Leclerc vive con assoluta serenità: "Geloso dei tifosi? Per niente. Dopo anni non facili per la Ferrari, sono contento che ci sia un italiano a vincere. Anzi, se c'è un pilota che voglio che faccia bene quando noi non facciamo bene, è proprio Kimi. Poi però speriamo di rendergli la vita un po' più difficile".

Charles Leclerc, in his eighth season in Red, talks about the contract renewal he just signed: "My heart will be with Ferrari until the end of my life. But I also chose to stay with my head. After years together with the team it couldn't just be love, which for me is indisputable and for which I would have signed anyway. It's that as you grow up you think more and want to make the right choices, especially in such an important moment of my career. With reason I understood that it was the best thing for me."
Despite other offers and the knowledge that the Drivers' World Championship has not been held in Maranello for almost 20 years, Leclerc's conviction has never wavered: "No, I have never had any doubts. There were options, some came to propose themselves, it was sensible to consider. On reflection, my answer was very clear" the words to La Repubblica.
What definitively convinced the Monegasque of the goodness of the project was the sports management: "I believe in the team and in Fred Vasseur. He has been building a group for years, but this is the first time that his team has developed a completely new car. The change in approach has already been seen with many innovations, many more will come. And I am on board with this vision".
With the renewal signed, now we have to think about Barcelona. Turning the page after the zero in Monaco is fundamental, even if the bitterness for the accident in the home race is still alive: "I learned what we knew for a while, unfortunately I paid dearly for it. I don't think the solution I use here is a revolution, but I hope it gives me satisfaction".
The Spanish weekend will also serve to measure Ferrari's growth and the feeling of its drivers with the current single-seaters. Leclerc spoke of great esteem for Lewis Hamilton, underlining the adaptation difficulties overcome by the Briton: "The previous cars were very particular, these new ones are also very particular for the power unit. An F1 driver has to adapt. Lewis is doing a great job in a year like this, he is very strong, he always has been."
Finally, a joke about the dualism in the hearts of Italian fans, currently divided between their love for Ferrari and the enthusiasm for the victories of young compatriot Kimi Antonelli on Mercedes. A dualism that Leclerc experiences with absolute serenity: "Jealous of the fans? Not at all. After not easy years for Ferrari, I'm happy that there's an Italian who wins. Indeed, if there's a driver who I want to do well when we don't do well, it's Kimi. But then we hope to make his life a little more difficult."
