Il Congo, dopo oltre mezzo secolo di attesa, torna finalmente sul palcoscenico della Coppa del Mondo FIFA. Il 31 marzo 2026, a Guadalajara, i Leopardi hanno conquistato una storica qualificazione battendo la Giamaica per 1-0 dopo i tempi supplementari nella finale del Percorso A del Torneo Play-Off FIFA. Un successo che ha cancellato cinquantadue anni di attesa dall'unica partecipazione mondiale del 1974.
La generazione d'oro guidata da Yoane Wissa, Chancel Mbemba, Arthur Masuaku e Cédric Bakambu ha riportato entusiasmo in tutto il Paese, regalando ai tifosi un sogno che sembrava ormai irraggiungibile.
Congo tra top, flop e sorprese al girone
TOP – YOANE WISSA
Il migliore della fase a gironi è stato senza alcun dubbio Yoane Wissa. L'attaccante ha chiuso con tre gol in tre partite, risultando decisivo praticamente in ogni occasione. Dopo una stagione complicata con il Newcastle, il numero nove si è completamente rilanciato in nazionale, trascinando i Leopardi con prestazioni di altissimo livello.
FLOP – CÉDRIC BAKAMBU
Da un giocatore della sua esperienza ci si aspettava qualcosa in più. Bakambu ha lavorato molto per la squadra ma è mancato negli ultimi metri, senza riuscire a incidere come avrebbe voluto. Il suo contributo è stato inferiore alle aspettative.
SORPRESA – AARON WAN-BISSAKA
La vera sorpresa è stata Aaron Wan-Bissaka. Pur essendo un veterano abituato ai grandi palcoscenici, ha impressionato per continuità e solidità, soprattutto nelle difficilissime sfide contro Portogallo e Colombia. La sua esperienza è stata fondamentale per tenere in piedi la difesa congolese.
Desabre, l'uomo della rinascita
Sébastien Desabre è il principale artefice della rinascita della nazionale congolese.
Arrivato nell'agosto del 2022, il tecnico francese aveva fissato due obiettivi ben precisi: qualificare la squadra alla Coppa d'Africa e riportarla ai Mondiali. Missione compiuta.
Pur non avendo mai giocato a calcio da professionista, Desabre ha costruito una squadra organizzata, intensa e soprattutto consapevole delle proprie qualità. Il quarto posto alla Coppa d'Africa ha rappresentato la svolta definitiva, facendo crescere fiducia e identità all'interno del gruppo.
Una qualificazione sofferta
Il percorso verso il Mondiale è stato tutt'altro che semplice.
Nel girone africano la Repubblica Democratica del Congo ha sfiorato il primo posto, arrendendosi solamente al Senegal nello scontro diretto decisivo.
Passata ai playoff come una delle migliori seconde della CAF, la squadra di Desabre ha eliminato prima il Camerun grazie a un gol allo scadere di Mbemba e successivamente la Nigeria ai calci di rigore dopo l'1-1 maturato nei tempi supplementari.
Il definitivo pass per il Mondiale è arrivato poi nel Torneo Play-Off FIFA grazie alla vittoria contro la Giamaica firmata Axel Tuanzebe.
La storia mondiale
Prima del 2026, l'unica partecipazione mondiale risaliva alla Germania Ovest 1974, quando il Paese si chiamava ancora Zaire.
All'epoca i Leopardi furono la prima nazionale dell'Africa centrale a qualificarsi per una Coppa del Mondo dopo aver eliminato Marocco e Zambia nelle qualificazioni.
Inseriti in un girone proibitivo con Scozia, Jugoslavia e Brasile, i congolesi persero tutte e tre le partite senza riuscire a segnare nemmeno una rete.
Il mondiale del 1974
L'esordio arrivò contro la Scozia con una sconfitta per 2-0.
Seguì il durissimo 9-0 subito dalla Jugoslavia, una delle sconfitte più pesanti nella storia della competizione.
Nell'ultima giornata, però, i Leopardi mostrarono grande orgoglio contro il Brasile campione del mondo, limitando i verdeoro a un 3-0 molto più dignitoso rispetto a quanto molti si aspettassero.
I record
Non avendo mai segnato in una fase finale della Coppa del Mondo, la Repubblica Democratica del Congo attende ancora il primo gol della propria storia nella competizione.
Tra i protagonisti del 1974, ben dieci calciatori disputarono tutte e tre le partite della fase a gironi, entrando nella storia del calcio congolese.

Before 2026, their only global participation dates back to West Germany 1974, when the country was still called Zaire.
