La Svezia, dopo aver superato ostacoli enormi, torna finalmente protagonista sulla scena mondiale. Gli scandinavi parteciperanno alla loro tredicesima Coppa del Mondo FIFA dopo aver saltato l'edizione del 2022 e proveranno a riportare in alto una nazionale che nella sua storia ha spesso lasciato il segno. L'obiettivo è tornare competitivi e magari ripetere quanto fatto negli Stati Uniti nel 1994, quando conquistarono uno storico terzo posto.
La Svezia nel girone tra top, flop e sorprese
Svezia qualificata ai sedicesimi dopo un girone che ha mostrato conferme, delusioni e prestazioni inaspettate da parte dei singoli.
TOP – ANTHONY ELANGA
Il volto della rinascita svedese è Anthony Elanga. Reduce da una stagione complicata con il Newcastle, l'esterno offensivo ha trovato nel Mondiale la sua definitiva consacrazione. Ha realizzato due reti, una contro il Giappone e una nella pesante sconfitta per 5-1 contro l'Olanda, dimostrandosi il giocatore più pericoloso della squadra. Rimarrà nella memoria anche un episodio curioso: dopo aver segnato il pareggio contro il Giappone, Elanga è scoppiato in lacrime convinto che la Svezia fosse eliminata, senza sapere che con il nuovo format passavano anche le migliori terze classificate.
FLOP – ISAK HIEN
Tra le delusioni del torneo c'è Isak Hien. Il centrale difensivo non è mai riuscito a trovare continuità nelle tre gare disputate, risultando spesso coinvolto nelle reti subite dalla Svezia. Come se non bastasse, un infortunio muscolare alla coscia ha chiuso anzitempo il suo Mondiale, impedendogli di aiutare la squadra nella fase decisiva.
SORPRESA – YASIN AYARI
La rivelazione del torneo è stata Yasin Ayari. Il giovane centrocampista ha impressionato soprattutto nella sfida contro la Tunisia, firmando una splendida doppietta che ha messo in mostra tutta la sua qualità tecnica. Anche nelle altre partite ha confermato di avere personalità e grandi margini di crescita, diventando una delle note più positive della spedizione svedese.
La rivoluzione di Potter
Il ritorno della Svezia ai Mondiali porta la firma di Graham Potter. L'allenatore inglese è arrivato nell'ottobre del 2025 dopo l'esonero di Jon Dahl Tomasson e per lui si è trattato quasi di un ritorno a casa. Potter aveva infatti costruito la propria carriera proprio in Svezia, portando l'Östersund dalla quarta divisione fino all'Allsvenskan, conquistando una storica Coppa di Svezia e una qualificazione ai gironi di Europa League.
Successivamente ha allenato Swansea, Brighton, Chelsea e West Ham prima di accettare la chiamata della nazionale svedese. Inizialmente nominato commissario tecnico ad interim, i risultati ottenuti gli sono valsi un contratto fino al 2030.
La qualificazione
La qualificazione alla Coppa del Mondo sembrava quasi impossibile. La Svezia aveva chiuso all'ultimo posto del proprio girone di qualificazione UEFA senza riuscire a vincere nemmeno una partita. A salvarla è stata la UEFA Nations League, che le ha garantito un posto nei playoff.
Da quel momento è cambiato tutto. In semifinale Viktor Gyökeres ha trascinato la squadra con una tripletta contro l'Ucraina, mentre nella finale contro la Polonia è stato ancora l'attaccante svedese a decidere tutto con il gol del definitivo 3-2 all'88'. Una rete che ha riportato gli scandinavi sul palcoscenico mondiale.
Una storia mondiale di prestigio
La Svezia è una delle nazionali europee con la tradizione più importante nella storia della Coppa del Mondo. Quella del 2026 rappresenta la tredicesima partecipazione della sua storia dopo le edizioni del 1934, 1938, 1950, 1958, 1970, 1974, 1978, 1990, 1994, 2002, 2006 e 2018.
Il miglior risultato resta la finale del 1958 disputata davanti al proprio pubblico. Guidata da George Raynor e trascinata da campioni come Nils Liedholm e Kurt Hamrin, la Svezia eliminò Unione Sovietica e Germania Ovest conquistando una storica finale contro il Brasile.
Proprio Liedholm entrò nella leggenda segnando il gol dell'1-0 dopo appena quattro minuti. Per alcuni minuti l'intero Paese sognò un'impresa destinata però a spegnersi sotto i colpi di Pelé, Vavá e Zagallo, che regalarono al Brasile il primo titolo mondiale con il definitivo 5-2.
Dal debutto al trionfo di USA '94
Il debutto mondiale arrivò nel 1934 con una prestigiosa vittoria per 3-2 contro l'Argentina. Quattro anni più tardi la Svezia entrò nella storia battendo Cuba per 8-0 nei quarti di finale di Francia 1938, grazie soprattutto alle triplette di Harry Andersson e Gustav Wetterström. Ancora oggi quella resta la vittoria più larga mai ottenuta in una fase a eliminazione diretta di un Mondiale.
L'impresa più iconica resta però quella di USA 1994. Nei quarti contro la Romania, la Svezia sembrava eliminata prima del colpo di testa di Kennet Andersson al 115', che portò la gara ai rigori. Qui Thomas Ravelli divenne l'eroe nazionale parando il penalty decisivo di Belodedici e regalando agli scandinavi una storica semifinale. Quel torneo si concluse poi con uno straordinario terzo posto.
L'ultima grande impresa
L'ultima cavalcata importante risale a Russia 2018. Nonostante il ritiro dalla nazionale di Zlatan Ibrahimović, la Svezia riuscì ad arrivare fino ai quarti di finale eliminando la Svizzera grazie alla rete decisiva di Emil Forsberg, prima di arrendersi all'Inghilterra.

I migliori marcatori della storia svedese ai Mondiali sono Kennet Andersson e Henrik Larsson, entrambi con cinque reti. Andersson realizzò tutte le sue marcature durante USA 1994 conquistando anche la Scarpa di Bronzo, mentre Larsson distribuì i propri gol nelle edizioni del 1994, 2002 e 2006.
Il record di presenze appartiene invece proprio a Henrik Larsson, che ha disputato tredici partite in tre differenti edizioni della Coppa del Mondo.

Ora arriva la sfida più difficile possibile. Ai sedicesimi di finale la Svezia affronterà la Francia, probabilmente la nazionale più forte dell'intero torneo e una delle principali candidate alla vittoria finale. Sulla carta i Bleus partono nettamente favoriti per qualità, profondità della rosa ed esperienza internazionale. Gli scandinavi, però, hanno già dimostrato di sapersi rialzare nei momenti più complicati e proveranno a giocarsi tutte le proprie carte affidandosi all'entusiasmo ritrovato con Graham Potter, alla vena realizzativa di Gyökeres e al talento di Elanga e Ayari. Perché, come insegna la storia della Coppa del Mondo, il calcio resta lo sport più imprevedibile del mondo.

TOP – ANTHONY ELANGA
The face of the Swedish rebirth is Anthony Elanga. Fresh from a complicated season with Newcastle, the attacking winger found his definitive consecration in the World Cup. He scored two goals, one against Japan and one in the heavy 5-1 defeat against the Netherlands, proving to be the most dangerous player on the team. A curious episode will also remain in the memory: after scoring the equalizer against Japan, Elanga burst into tears convinced that Sweden was eliminated, without knowing that with the new format the best third-placed teams would also advance.
FLOP – ISAK HIEN
Among the tournament's disappointments is Isak Hien. The central defender never managed to find continuity in the three matches played, often being involved in the goals conceded by Sweden. As if that wasn't enough, a thigh muscle injury ended his World Cup prematurely, preventing him from helping the team in the decisive phase.
SURPRISE – YASIN AYARI
The revelation of the tournament was Yasin Ayari. The young midfielder impressed above all in the match against Tunisia, scoring a splendid brace that showcased all his technical quality. Even in the other matches he confirmed that he has personality and great room for growth, becoming one of the most positive notes of the Swedish expedition.

Sweden's return to the World Cup bears the signature of Graham Potter. The English manager arrived in October 2025 after the sacking of Jon Dahl Tomasson and for him it was almost a homecoming. Potter had in fact built his career in Sweden, taking Östersund from the fourth division up to the Allsvenskan, winning a historic Swedish Cup and qualifying for the Europa League groups. He subsequently coached Swansea, Brighton, Chelsea and West Ham before accepting the call of the Swedish national team. Initially appointed interim technical commissioner, the results obtained earned him a contract until 2030.

Qualifying for the World Cup seemed almost impossible. Sweden had finished in last place in their UEFA qualifying group without managing to win a single match. What saved her was the UEFA Nations League, which guaranteed her a place in the playoffs. From that moment everything changed. In the semi-final Viktor Gyökeres led the team with a hat-trick against Ukraine, while in the final against Poland it was once again the Swedish striker who decided everything with the goal that made it 3-2 in the 88th minute. On paper, Les Bleus start out as clear favorites in terms of quality, depth of the squad and international experience. The Scandinavians, however, have already demonstrated that they know how to get back up in the most complicated moments and will try to play all their cards by relying on the enthusiasm found with Graham Potter, the scoring streak of Gyökeres and the talent of Elanga and Ayari. Because, as the history of the World Cup teaches, football remains the most unpredictable sport in the world.
