La delusione di tutti i giocatori portoghesi era ben visibile al termine della partita contro la Spagna, che all’ultimo ha strappato il pass per i quarti. In particolare c’era un giocatore visibilmente pensieroso e deluso, che a 41 anni aveva ancora una voglia matta di incidere e portare la propria squadra il più lontano possibile. Questo giocatore era Cristiano Ronaldo, che ha partecipato a 6 Mondiali ma non è riuscito mai a vincerne uno, come invece il suo rivale Lionel Messi è riuscito a fare.
Un Mondiale da dimenticare, o quasi
Cristiano Ronaldo aveva le idee chiare, come sempre. Voleva portare il Portogallo alla vittoria del suo primo Mondiale. Lui che è stato il giocatore più rappresentativo dell’intera storia portoghese, molto più di gente come Eusebio e Luis Figo, aveva ancora questo obiettivo. E se un Europeo è riuscito a vincerlo, nella competizione più importante al mondo invece ha sempre fatto fatica e quest’anno voleva dimostrare a tutti chi era ancora il numero 1. Purtroppo alla prima partita non riesce ad incidere, e il Portogallo si ferma contro un’arcigna Repubblica Democratica del Congo sull’1-1. Esplode la polemica sul fatto che forse Ronaldo andava sostituito, che Messi aveva già fatto cose incredibili nella prima partita mentre lui era la copia sbiadita del miglior Ronaldo. Insomma non tirava certo una buona aria in casa portoghese, ma è proprio nelle difficoltà che CR7 ha saputo sempre rialzarsi e nella seconda partita dimostra come le critiche forse erano state troppo pesanti. Contro l’Uzbekistan è autore di una doppietta nel 5 a 0 che regala la prima vittoria del Portogallo a questo Mondiale, divenendo così l’unico giocatore ad aver segnato in 6 edizioni della competizione. E dopo la partita Ronaldo fa capire a tutti, nonostante le critiche, di non avere alcuna intenzione di mollare.
Però all’ultima partita del primo turno contro la Colombia, la nazionale portoghese si ferma sullo 0-0, e nonostante la prova positiva, sono costretti a qualificarsi come seconda, complicando il loro percorso nella competizione.
Ai sedicesimi incontrano la Croazia, che negli ultimi tornei è sempre stata protagonista. Ronaldo sa che deve dare il tutto per tutto e aiuta, con un suo gol, a vincere per 2-1 lasciando il campo sfinito ma soddisfatto all’81’.
Il percorso però diventa ancora più ostico agli ottavi, perché c’è la Spagna campione d’Europa. Ma la partita è noiosa per lunghi tratti, con pochi spunti offensivi e Ronaldo sembra essere un corpo estraneo, poco cercato. Le decisioni più importanti sono rimandate a quando tutto sarà più calmo, ma intanto una certezza sembra esserci: quella contro la Spagna è stata la sua ultima partita a un Mondiale.

Nel 2006 alla sua prima partecipazione otterrà quello che alla fine sarà il suo miglior risultato, quarto. Gioca due partite nella fase a gironi e nella vittoria contro l’Iran segnerà il suo unico gol della competizione. Sia ai quarti sia alle semifinali sarà sempre titolare per l’intera partita ma non riuscirà a trovare la via del gol.
Nel 2010, al primo Mondiale da capitano, si ripete ai gironi con un solo gol nella partita contro la Corea del Nord, e viene eliminato contro la Spagna agli ottavi, non sapendo che 16 anni dopo il destino, beffardo, si ripeterà allo stesso modo.
Anche nel 2014 fa un solo gol sempre nel primo turno, nella vittoria contro il Ghana che non basterà a avanzare nel torneo, perché arriveranno a pari punti con gli USA, ma per differenza reti i lusitani vengono eliminati.
Nel 2018 esordisce subito con una tripletta alla Spagna e nella partita successiva segna il gol che regala la vittoria ai danni del Marocco. Sembra un Ronaldo diverso, più maturo e concentrato. Il Portogallo può sognare, ma agli ottavi di finale la troppa fiducia si rivelerà cattiva consigliera e i lusitani perderanno contro l’Uruguay. Questo sarà il Mondiale dove ha segnato di più, 4 gol.
Nel 2022 in Qatar segna alla prima partita una rete , gioca sempre titolare ai gironi ma qualcosa cambia, l’allenatore Fernando Santos vuole più movimento in attacco e inizia a preferirgli Gonçalo Ramos, e infatti agli ottavi e ai quarti entrerà da subentrato non riuscendo però a dare il suo contributo.
Con il mondiale 2026 si conclude così la sua avventura nella competizione più importante con 27 partite e 11 reti. Aggiungendo alla sua interminabile lista di record, il fatto di essere stato l’unico nella storia a segnare almeno un gol in 6 mondiali diversi.
Il confronto con Messi e un obiettivo ancora da raggiungere
È inevitabile che i due che hanno condiviso il palcoscenico calcistico degli ultimi 20 anni vengano messi a confronto. Ma forse diventa ingiusto perché non si mette in conto una cosa, anzi due. Innanzitutto, Lionel Messi è un talento innato, Cristiano Ronaldo che di talento ne aveva da vendere ha comunque dovuto allenarsi il doppio e trattare il proprio corpo come un tempio per raggiungere quello che ha raggiunto. E in più, a livello di nazionale, non si può non tenere conto del fatto che Messi gioca nell’Argentina che ha una storia vincente da sempre, mentre il Portogallo ha raggiunto i suoi migliori risultati proprio con CR7.
Quindi in definitiva sicuramente Cristiano poteva essere più decisivo nei Mondiali ma tutto quello che ha fatto per il Portogallo non verrà mai dimenticato. Ma la carriera del numero 7 più famoso al mondo non finisce qui, anzi. Il prossimo e ultimo obiettivo è raggiungere quota 1000 gol. Il giocatore ex Real ha sempre affermato di voler raggiungere quella cifra che Pelè avrebbe superato di cui però non esistono filmati che attestino il primato e l’ex Manchester United vuole essere il primo di cui vengano documentati tutti i 1000 gol.
