Riesce a portare i gialloneri anche in finale di Champions League nel 2013 contro i rivali del Bayern Monaco, ma arriverà una sconfitta nonostante l’ottima prestazione.
Questi grandi traguardi scatenano gli interessi delle squadre più importanti del mondo, fra cui il Liverpool che deciderà di affidargli il ruolo di allenatore per riportare un campionato che mancava da troppi anni.
