Inter, Chivu frees the national teams: head to the World Cup for Calhanoglu, Thuram, Akanji and Dumfries

Once the euphoria from the victory of the historic double and the impressive celebration in the streets of the city had worn off, Inter began preparing for the last day of the championship against Bologna. He will do so, however, without some of his champions, released early by Cristian Chivu to allow them to start focusing on the 2026 World Cup.

In fact, their season is not over yet: in less than a month Akanji, Dumfries, Calhanoglu, Sucic, Lautaro, Thuram and Bonny will be back on the field to play for the World Cup. The presence of Stefan De Vrij is still in the balance, suspended pending Koeman's official call-ups.

Not all of them, however, decided to pack their bags prematurely. Akanji, Dumfries, Calhanoglu and Thuram have already started to empty their Appiano Gentile lockers, while Sucic, Lautaro and Bonny have remained at Cristian Chivu's disposal for the moment.

If the absences of the Frenchman and the Turk were widely expected, also considering the less than optimal physical conditions in which they find themselves, the same cannot be said for the Swiss and the Dutchman. Nonetheless, the Romanian coach decided to release them even before the final match of the championship: a wise and in some ways revolutionary choice by the coach, who, having already achieved their seasonal objectives, allowed them to concentrate on the World Cup.

Montella Turchia

A move much appreciated by the players themselves and by their technical commissioners, such as the Turkey coach Vincenzo Montella, who decided to thank Chivu's move: "I thank the boy and Inter who allowed us to evaluate him as early as Friday given his condition. I hope that in these two weeks he can find the right condition to be able to play in the World Cup".

… e chi resta

The Italian contingent, who did not qualify for the World Cup, continues to populate the Nerazzurri changing rooms, as does Zielinski, given that his Poland also missed the appointment with the world championship. In their company there will also be Sommer and Mkhitaryan, who have bid farewell to their national team, and the various Bissecks, Carlos Augusto, Luis Henrique, Diouf and Pepo Martinez, left at home by their respective technical commissioners.

Different story for Lautaro, Sucic, Bonny and De Vrij. While the Flying Dutchman is still waiting for clarification on his possible call-up, the captain, the Croatian and the Ivorian are in perfect shape and have decided to stay with the group until the end. Chivu, then, will also be able to count on them for the trip to Dall'Ara, in which a large number of Under 23s will also take part. They will be the ones to take center stage in the final match of the championship against Bologna, before going on holiday and cheering on their teammates from the screens of their televisions.
